We have a small sample, but I think we can see a bit of a pattern in the spread of the returns and I'd observed that some of the active folks are very happy, some are glum and the vast majority of the passive folks are neither that happy or that sad....just middle of the road. This should surprise nobody.

To add some thoughts to bostonerimus's last post, firstly its worth a reminder that we have a fairly wide variety of risk levels in this sample. For example my portfolio is 100% equities and I don't believe any of the passive portfolios carry that much risk. As an aside I do have a separate fixed interest amount, however its in fixed term accounts and P2P rather than bond funds and only really gets interest payments once a year, so doesn't really work for this league.

I am heavy on small/mid caps which didn't serve me well during the end of last year. I think I had the highest drawdown at nearly 13%, compared to 11.2% for the FTSE global reference. To be expected.

A good chunk of my early gains were from two passive funds, L&G tech and health. I have since sold both. Using index trackers 'actively' is very different than passive investing. Over 60% of my allocation is now in a single active fund.

Of course :) . My L&G passive funds have been reinvested into Fundsmith over the last year. The tech fund, after it has doubled since i bought it. I had bought Scottish Mortgage elsewhere and Fundsmith bought Facebook so felt I had too much tech. The healthcare fund after it did its job last year and kept the losses down. The world seems to be cracking down in drugs prices so I am happy with the medical devices exposure in Fundsmith.

Fundsmith is doing well up 6% in as many weeks. It will be interesting to see how he does V LT Global and Blue Whale over the next year or so.

A better month for the active selection, closing the gap...but still a decent lead for team passive
