Just musing here but - how is it that DS's (& I certainly include my one & only in this) manage to hoard plates bowls & mugs in their own personal spaces & NOT realise that eventually they are going to come down to refuel & find they have nothing to put that sandwich/pizza/coffee etc in or on?

I have just had to do a dishwasher load (bought by DS because dishwashing was one of his chores) because I have no more jugs or bowls left to heat custard in & believe me I had a few. The last time I had custard was Boxing Day!

I have however totally confused him now because the only way he is having more custard is if he makes it with custard powder. Sometimes it is fun to be "bad mother". I am out overnight tonight & if he wants more Xmas pudding he is going to be on a rapid learning curve. Cue evil laughter!

It's hard to fathom how the minds of DSs' work in this context. I think they live purely in the moment .

I hope your DS managed to make some form of custard :rotfl:.

  • I've been quite efficient and ticked most things off my list. I am slightly exhausted now though, so I'm on the sofa downing cups of tea to revive me :).

    - Put dishwasher on (we literally have no clean plates ). DONE
    - Put laundry on to wash (we're running out of clothes too). DONE
    - Clean mud off my ankle boots and trainers. DONE
    - Polish ankle boots and use sports gel on trainers. DONE
    - Pin up my new jeans and shorten them.
    - Ring hospital about DS1's assessment form. DONE
    - Buy new mascara. DONE

The only thing I haven't done is take up my new jeans and that's a big job that I don't want to do when I'm tired in case I muck it up and ruin them .

I even added a new task to the list which was to clean my boots with old fashioned shoe polish, plus clean my trainers with sports gel. They both look amazing now :T. Some of my shoe cleaning brushes belonged to my Grandpa and it's nice to think of him when I use them.

  • We finally caved in and put the heating on for three hours last night, because I discovered blue mould all over the back of our bedroom mirror :(. We thought having the heating on for a few hours every evening might help to dry out the damp from the house. Also I didn't want DS3 to be glad to go back to college because of the cold :(.

We think one of the velux windows in our bedoom might be leaking a bit which won't be helping, but we can't do much about that at the moment.

  • Perhaps. DH said he would take a look at it when he gets time. He said maybe it's not shutting properly because it needs oiling, or if it's not that then it could be a loose slate on the roof maybe. Anyway I hope he gets a chance to look at it soon.

It's been quite cold here today too,I'm not surprised you put your heating on,I've had mine on for most of the day because I couldn't get warm despite being busy taking the decorations down

  • It's quiet chilly in my part of Devon too. We've decided to have the heating on the lowest setting between 7pm and 10pm every evening, in the hope of making the house less damp and getting rid of the mould. It's taking the edge off the cold anyway :).

Sorry to hear about the mould, HH, but you probably caught it in time before it's appeared in other areas of the house too. I could write a whole book about mould, well not exactly how to eradicate it for good which would take better brains than mine and OH's, but rather the problems of living with it:eek:

Ours is a detached house in a very open and windswept position. I suppose the location is probably irrelevant but the structure of the house gets a fair old battering:eek:. We don't have cavity walls and the inner surfaces of the walls in every room are always very cold to the touch. That's where the mould forms. Moisture in the room always condenses on the coldest surface if it has no other outlet. We also have all the windows double-glazed which, as we've been advised by an 'expert' on damp, can contribute to the problem. We had to replace a couple of our double-glazed windows a couple of years ago as the originals were steaming up badly between the 2 panes of glass probably because the rubber seals had perished over the many tears we'd had them. The newer window frames had special vents in them to allow some airflow at all times into the room without having to open the windows. We used to open the others but not in rooms we weren't using much.

As you dry washing indoors that will produce lots of moisture into the air of your rooms. Equally, showers, baths, cooking, even breathing release warn moisture into the air which will naturally condense on the coldest surface. I know you said you are attached to neighbouring properties which helps to keep your home warm (lucky you:j) so something like a mirror would seem the ideal place for mould to develop, rather than on your walls which are probably not very cold.

We've been advised to have the heating on low for a lot of the day and keep windows open a bit in most rooms. You can imagine how well that advice went down with OH:rotfl:. Having windows open even in the coldest weather is par for the course with him but 'wasting' money on heat which is just escaping into the outside air is definitely a no-no.

HH, just had a thought about a potential job for you which I'm sure you'd be ideal for. I did it myself several years ago and enjoyed it. It's Exam Invigilating. Don't mean to interfere but saw it and thought of you.

There's a thread on MSE about it which was started over 10 years ago but I see someone has posted recently with more up to date information. I think it's post 31 onwards that's the latest. Here's the link:
