Overtaking a police vehicle

I was on the motorway yesterday and it was raining a fair bit at night. I overtook a police van (which was driving with me a few miles). I pulled back into the middle lane as soon as it was safe to do. The police van then flashed their full beam headlights at me, overtook and speed off. I believe I was doing 70.

I am really worried as to what will happen next? Speeding ticket or direct prosecution in the court?

Please help!!!

Wouldn't they have had to stop you there & then if they were going to fine or prosecute you, or just "have a chat"?
  • Nothing will happen stop worrying.

Nothing will happen, they were simply warning you to drive to the conditions, possibly you pulled in too soon for them.
  • I was extra cautious to not pull in too soon as it was raining fairly heavily. My worry is that nowadays they have a dash cam and all sorts of fancy radar cameras.

I am losing sleep and hair over it :(

I hope you guys are right. Thanks a ton :)

Well obviously neither, they flashed their lights presumably because you were in the wrong lane...

As I understand things, in the circumstances you describe a police vehicle needs to pull you over there and then if they wish to seek a prosecution. As they didn't then you've nothing to worry about.

No, they don't need to pull him over there and then. They could send him a 172 notice/nip if required but I doubt they will.
  • Perhaps they were signalling for you to move to the inside lane after you had completed your overtake.
All your base are belong to us.
  • Was the left lane empty?

Most likely they was flashing to tell you to drive with the conditions your in

Bear in mind that you need to at least double the 2 second rule in conditions like those that you describe. At 70mph, that's further than you might think.

You need to leave a gap of at least 125metres at 70mph in those conditions.
