Overtaking a police vehicle

So there were no other vehicles... apart from the police car that had to use the outside lane to overtake you? It sounds like your OH was completely oblivious to the car approaching from the rear which seems about par for the course for middle-lane hoggers. (Unless the police were driving on a motorway at speed, in the dark, in the rain with no lights on... in which case I apologise for any aspersions cast!
) Every generation blames the one before...

They won't do anything
they'd need to take your average speed over some distance to be able to prosecute you which they wouldn't have done.
Maybe it was a "be careful, as it's wet out"? or they hit a bump in the road and didn't actually flash you?
You'll be fine

I suspect that eitherthe police were overtaking something in lane 1,
and were about to return to that lane, or alternatively they were deliberately sitting in lane 2 at about 60 as a hint at a safe speed for the conditions.0 -

I had Police behind me, 1am in the morning, 3 mates after a night out, I just carried on as I normally would, not going to do 10 under the speed limit just because they are behind me.0

The problem with the publicity surrounding the so-called hogging the middle lane law, is that the law itself doesn't exist. What does exist is that the police can issue a fixed penalty notice (notice all the reports talked about on the spot fines which was also codswallop) if by hogging the middle lane (or any other lane for that matter) a motorist inconveniences or endangers others. It's not an offence in its own right. Whether it should be is another matter entirely.
It could always have been dealt with as a Careless/Driving without due care it's just that the government decided to put spin on it and the press lapped it up. Trouble with spin, is that it's difficult to read it with any real clarity.
The OP, you are vanishingly unlikely to see anything come from this. You have 14 days of waiting to be sure (provided the V5C is in your name at your address), move on, but learn from the experience. Give more space and use the correct lanes.0
