As it was raining heavy did you have your headlights on? i am sure that this is a legal requirment now, maybe why the police flashed you.

As it has always been in conditions of reduced visibility, you mean?

You won't be getting anything, nothing will happen.
Agreed. Even if you are getting "done" for it, there's nothing you can do about it.
No good worrying until the letter drops through the door.
Which it won't. They'd have pulled you there and then.
I've overtaken police more than once on the motorway. If you do it legally and courteously as you should, then why would they nick you?
I remember one time in particular. The cop had acquired quite a little knot of motorists who wouldn't overtake him. I went past him at about 70 and he looked at me and grinned.

Just realised I was "middle lane hogging". I was not aware that it was illegal to do so as many other drivers in the UK (according to confused.com survey).

So, I could technically get 3 points for careless/illegal driving? *sob*

We hired a van that was huge and my OH was getting used to the size of it. He was driving along a dark stretch of the highway around 3am on a Sunday morning to catch the Ferry. It was raining as well. As there was NO other vehicles, my OH was driving on the middle lane. We are aware of middle lane hogging. There was absolutely no other vehicle that we were obstructing at that time. From nowhere came this police car. Overtook us with blue lights, showed a sign to "Use the correct lane". As soon as we got to the left most lane, they sped off. Never got anything in terms of letters or fine. It has been about 6 months now.

Police deliberately do under 70, as otherwise there would be no chance of seeing anyone at all.

But you're right lots of people refuse to overtake, it's ridiculous

That used to be the case.. but I can't recall seeing a police car on a motorway doing that in years. Now many of the motorways have cameras no need for them to do it anymore.

You can't be looking very hard. I see them most journeys I do.
