OP I am completely on your side with this one. I think the only answer is to put a laminated sign on your post box saying something like...`all parcels and signature collections please knock at the door`...you shouldn't have to do that but it seems that common sense does not prevail. Luckily i have a great postman.

My job entails calling at certain addresses and if not home i leave a calling card....i would not think i should not knock at somebodies door if they have a post box near the gate...the only time i would not go to the door is if the gate was locked....i would then leave a calling card in their box. The OP`s gate was not locked.

BTW what is the point of the box if you're happy with everything to the door?

Courtesy. To prevent the need for the postman to traipse up and down our long drive every morning to get to our front door.

But as it's apparently what has caused this issue, I've now removed it.

They collect and sign for the package at their local delivery office.

Which is easy when you're not 35 miles away at work during the opening hours of the local post office. I won't be able to collect the parcel for a couple of weeks - even though I don't even want it any more.

There is the option on the card to arrange redelivery but I don't see the point.

It's not for the postman to second guess the homeowners wishes.

Even though he's managed to second-guess it for the last four years.
  • Please complain though. You paid £12 so this item would be delivered on Saturday...did it not cross the mind of the thoughtless postman to think that you might `need` this item on Saturday. (did he think you would `shoot` him for knocking on the door)

I have been int he shower several times when my postman has almost knocked the door down and when i got down to the door she said she knew i was home because my car was outside and she didn't want me to have the hassle of having to collect it and it could be urgent.

i just think your postman (rules and regulations or not) was thoughtless, lazy, just plain thick or all three.

    Please complain to royal mail.

The OP`s gate was not locked.

We still don't know whether or not it was as OP has failed to answer that question although has suggested that it's not locked by saying the postie could have opened the gate. They also failed to answer whether or not the gate gets stuck at all meaning postie couldn't open it, and whether or not they have a dog/dogs or any signs to suggest there may be dogs on the property.

I'm actually on OPs side that an attempt should have been made at the door, not everyone has boxes because they don't want people on their property, some do it to save the postie walking up and down their drive everyday, that kind gesture may have backfired. However if there is an issue with the gate or any dogs living at the property then the postie did the right thing by not entering.

I worked as a temp postie around 15 years ago, fresh out of school and my uncle got me the job (I know the job and the company have changed a lot since then) but seriously some properties are barely accessible, I had wasps nests in bushes by gates, gates that you have to fight with to open and close, nettles and brambles overgrown, slippery algae covered paths, dogs running loose, and even chased by a goose one day. It's basically the customer who has to make the property accessible and it's not always unreasonable for the postie to not enter the property.

I guessed as much when you mentioned your long path but it could easily be because you have a fierce dog for example.

Don't you fancy adding a notice?

We're just a cul-de-sac with open plan fronts and shortish drives but I've seen the red card 'trick' more than once. I've even opened the door on a postie attempting it lol. Parcelforce here are worse - they seem to write a whole batch of cards and take a lorry load to the local Post Office instead. The Post Office are not happy as they don't have the room as it tends to be the larger items.

    Goodness me.

What is it with everyone on this forum jumping on little details and trying to 'catch-out' people for lying, all the while completely ignoring the original question?

The first three responses to my original post essentially suggest that I'm a liar and have fabricated the entire story. For what reason I'd bother doing this I do not know.

Those posts also have 3-4 'likes' which seems to be people agreeing I'm a liar.

I wasn't aware someone had specifically asked that question, but the fact I mentioned the postman has had no trouble walking to my front door to hand me parcels in the past should have made that clear.

The gate was not locked. We don't have any rabid dogs or angry wasps or any other reason why the postman decided to not bother delivering.

I know what you mean...most people are really helpful but sometimes when you start a new thread on here you end up feeling ten times worse and having to defend every single thing that you say.

complain to royal mail....idiot postman and i would be really annoyed if this happened to me. I think you should get your £12 back as the postman failed to do his job properly
