I watched the postman not bother delivering my parcel

I bought something online and paid £12 for Saturday delivery.
I was looking out of the window and saw the postman arrive, get out my parcel and come to my gate. I went and put my shoes on to go and meet him. As I left the house I saw the van drive off.
He didn't leave the parcel, just a card saying I wasn't in and I could collect my parcel from the sorting office from Monday (today).
I got in the car but after about 30mins, gave up trying to find him.
This isn't the trader's fault and surely they'd argue a delivery attempt was made. I have no proof other than my word that I saw him not bother.
What are my rights here? Who is responsible?

Why on earth would he bother to get out your parcel and carry it to your house and then leave a card?
Makes no sense.
Most times just a card is left because do they do not have to take the parcel in the first place.0 -
But you didn't see him not bother, you were putting your shoes on when he put the card through your door.

Do you really think a postie would bother to carry a parcel to your front door only to leave a card without even trying to knock? Why would he even have bothered to carry it to your door? I've heard people say before that they leave cards without even having the parcel with them but never heard of them bothering to carry it to your door only to walk away. Even the cards will take a minute to fill out, unless you live in a mansion how would he have time to get from your gate to your door, fill out a card, post it, get back to his van, put the parcel back in the van, and get in and drive away all before you got out there?
It sounds more like you took so long to get to the door that he thought there was nobody home and took it back to the office. If you saw him out of the window why didn't you open it and call out, or knock it to get his attention and for him to see that you were home, he may have waited longer if he had known you were just taking your time to get there. Why did you waste time putting on your shoes to meet him? You obviously couldn't do it quick enough to meet him before he got to your door so it would have been more sensible to not put on your shoes and meet him at your door instead.0 -
I've had similar happen - postie who most definitely did not knock, just dumped a card in the porch and left. I only noticed because I was in the front room and heard him close the porch door behind him as he departed.
I can only assume he couldn't be bothered faffing around to get a signature. The cards don't take any time to fill out if they don't bother filling in any of the relevant bit boxes.
I agree it sounds ridiculous. But it happened. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Our gate is quite a distance from our house (probably around 200ft+). I was putting my shoes on to walk down our drive to meet him halfway.
He left a card in our post box which is next to our gate as I can only assume he couldn't be bothered to lock his van, open the gate and walk to our house to knock on the door.
He never came to our door to actually attempt the delivery.
I'd be grateful for some useful replies rather than just accusations that I'm lying.0 -

It would take as long to fill out the card as it would to get a signature, which takes seconds. More likely your postie did not have the parcel with him.
I don't understand why OP needed to put on their shoes to open the door. There's no reason why the postie would carry the parcel to the door, fill out a card and then dart off without knocking. And even if he didn't knock, OP had seen him, surely when you see the postman arriving you'd go straight to the door, doorbell or not. I'm often at the door before the postman/ courier is.0 -
unless he brought the wrong parcel to the door and so instead of going back and sorting it out left a card......strange....the only thing you can do is when you collect it tell them at the office what happened.
sorry - so he didn't even come to your front door.....complain when you collect it. I dont think there is anything else you can do. I think its disgraceful....lazy postman who isn't doing his job properly by the sounds of it.0 -

Correct - he didn't come to the door.
Problem is, I don't need it anymore. It was for last Saturday night.0 -

I think it was reasonable for us to assume that your letterbox was in your door, given that probably 98% of houses in the country are like that. You could have given the extra information in your first post so that we had a better understanding.
I guess all you can do is complain to the PO.

Do you have a dog? Is the gate locked or difficult to open?
It still seems strange that he actually carried the parcel to the gate knowing you have a box there and would leave a card unless there was a reason for him not to come up to the house.0
