  • I have been very successful in reclaiming money from various Credit Card companies, such as First Direct, MBNA, Lloyds, Virgin, etc.and have probably recouped around £10k....which goes some way to explaining why my finances have been in a mess for so long!
Dont give up...most paid up after just one letter but one or two needed more persuasion!
Thanks to Martin for all his help, advice and support.:j
  • Just got an excellent result with HSBC today 15/09/10

Simply wrote to them three weeks ago asking for details of charges on mine and missus credit card.

Received two letters today where they have pre-empted my actions by offering full settlement in refunding all late fees (£20 & £12 mixture) plus interest at the contracted rate i.e. much higher than standard 8%

    Wowowee!

Absolutely chuffed that HSBC were so prompt in responding and refunding without so much as a standard letter from me asking for repayment

Seems like they have acknowledged they were in the wrong and decided to just pay up.....boy they must have made millions in profit from us poor souls to adopt this "we'll just pay up" approach.

Money should be in our HSBC bank account shortly so once again many thanks to Martin and this excellent forum
  • B.O.S. paid back just over 100 pounds in charges on my credit card. I used Martin's letter templates and got to the stage where I said I would go to the ombudsman. They sent a cheque two weeks later.

    Thank you Martin!
  • sent off the reclaim letter back in july to Capital one,to be honest i had forgot all about it but yesterday had a letter off them offering a refund of the full amount.

£197 in total which included PPI charges, interest and then statatory interest.
  • I think i've had some success with Aqua. Requested statements back in June which were sent to my new address without any issues. Totted up the charges which came to £396 and sent of for a refund. I then waited and waited and waited and heard nothing. Realised i'd never seen a statement in a couple of months either so rang up to find out what was going on and was told I was over my limit and i'd been thumped with a load of new charges. Turns out they hadn't changed my address as requested, and through that i'd missed the fact i hadn't paid as i'd never seen the statement. Following payment hadn't been enough then and another set of charges appeared. Spoke to a guy who didn't seem to care, but insisted that he had now changed my address. A month later still nothing so ring up again and the address is still wrong! Spoke to a lovely girl who changed it and refunded a couple of charges for me, she also told me that Aqua had rejected my claim (never seen a letter) so I sent in the LBA. Still hadn't heard anything last week, so drafted a letter telling them what I thought of their customer service when I thought i'd ring again first. Spoke to a guy in the charges department at the Halifax rather than Aqua who told me that they had till the 27th to respond and that the address they had was still the old one!! They had read my letter that I hadn't had anything from them and took it as a rejection, so it had gone back through the system. Anyway just checked online now and although the balance still shows that I am just over the card limit, I have an available credit of £383!! I'll update if that changes but it seems that they have refunded me the charges and interest which is brilliant. Thank you Aqua, most appreciated, a massive help to me in my current situation

  • Provider: Aqua Credit Card
    Amount Reclaimed: £398 + interest
Amount they paid: £398 + interest
The story: Pretty much as above. Refused to acknowledge that their charges were unfair. Asked them to have another look and they paid out. Everything was done at the last minute from their end, but thats negotiation I suppose. Amount owed has now halved which is brilliant. Other than the massive issues with my change of address, HBOS's 3 different computer systems that don't seem to talk to each other and one useless, and quite frankly, rude customer services advisor, the process has been as I would have expected. I spoke to some very friendly people at Aqua, so my advice as ever is to be polite and curteous to anyone that you may deal with. You never know how much of a difference that could make

I had many overlimit charges and a couple late fees and thought I would see if i could reclaim them back as the law on bank charges did not apply. I sent a letter asking for the full amount, at the end of the letter I said if i did not hear a reply within 14 days I will go to the Ombudsman. I had a reply which said there was nothing they could do. So I phoned them up to say thankyou for the letter, if there was nothing they could do I will pass it on to the Ombudsman. They then started to say i would have a new offer but it could take four weeks. I said I wasnt prepared to wait that long and the Omsbudman would sort it out sooner. I told them I wanted a reply within a week (by 1 OCT) with the new offer. I didnt receive a letter but checked my account and the full amount plus 20 more was in there. Cant believe it!
  • Successfully reclaimed £70.75 in charges from Intelligent Finance!
  • Provider: Capital One
    Amount Reclaimed: £636.00 + £207.51 interest
    Amount they paid: £644.06
The story: First letter detailing charges sent to Capital One 17th August giving them 14 days to respond. No response so resent a copy of that letter to them on 31st August threatening court action if no response within 14 days.

I received a letter from them on 6th September saying they would take up to 40 days to look into my complaint. I received a letter yesterday (although they have dated the letter 23rd Sept!) offering me £644.06 as a 'gesture of goodwill'.

Really happy with this as I was expecting them to offer me the difference between £20 and £12. :D
  • Capital One
    £135.00 Claimed
    £153.77 Paid

Many thanks to MSE, I followed the easy instructions.

Sent the 1st letter asking for my charges back which was (as expected) declined.

Sent a 2nd letter on 18th September 2010 saying I would be taking court action.

    Received an offer of £144 + £9.77 interest on 8th October 2010 - £153.77 ACCEPTED!

:j They will offset what is owing on my card (currently £85) and send a cheque for the difference - just waiting for this to happen - another debt cleared! :j
    Thank you!!!!! :)
