What can I do with green tomatoes (NOT chutney)?

  • I grew tumbling tomatoes so grew all of mine in hanging baskets and they still got blight during all that rain.

My way of dealing with it was to sit for 3 hours and cut every leaf and remaining flower off all the plants, leaving just the green tomatoes. They then all lived for another 6 wks and I was able to harvest a lot of red ones as well as lbs of green ones that I put in a bowl or three around the house and was able to pick off about 6 or 7 a day. yes some of them didn't ripen, and some got blight so couldn't ripen, but I extended the life of the plants by over a month and still managed to get a harvest so felt very lucky!

I did actually pick all the green tomatoes from my plants before wanging them but they still developed blight. I must have thrown away at least 20 plants.
  • I tried to make green tom chutney - managed to forget to stir it near the end and burnt pan - the joy
  • Thankyou all so much for your suggestions I am going to give the oven and olive oil a go tommorrow when I am using my oven anyway and the chutney sound lovely,

    TOMATO SAUCE
    One medium chopped onion
    2 lbs chopped tomatoes
    2 garlic cloves
    sprig of basil

Fry onions in olive oil until soft.
Add chopped tomatoes & garlic & cook for about 15 minutes until pulpy.
When cool, whizz to a purree with a stick blender.

You can vary the amount of tomatoes & onions. It's not an exact science.
I make pounds of this and put into bags of different size portions for bolognese sauce, minestrone soup, stewS and caseroles.

You can also make lovely tomato soup with about 2/3 lbs on tomatoes, 2 chopped onions. Fry until soft and add chicken stock Whizz with a blender and then you don't need to peel the tomatoes first.

    Hi all,

Due to blight (:(), now have 1.2kg of green cherry tomatoes that need to be used up sharpish.

Any nice recipes that will keep? I don't really have a glut of anything else bar cucumbers.

And the apples aren't ready yet, not wanting to buy apples for making chutney.
  • Thanks - I think we are going to need these recipes. We've loads of tomatoes on the plants but there's no sign of them turning red.
  • I have the same problem.
I found this recipe a while ago:

    Green Tomato Cake
    • 2 1/4 cups sugar
    • 1 cup vegetable oil or melted shortening
    • 3 eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla
    • 3 cups flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1 cup pecans or walnuts
    • 1 cup raisins
    • 2 1/2 cups diced green tomatoes
    • coconut (optional)
    Preheat oven to 180C.
In mixing bowl, beat sugar, vegetable oil or shortening, eggs and vanilla until smooth and creamy.
Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg; slowly beat into egg mixture.
Blend well. Stir in pecans, raisins and tomatoes.
    Pour into greased 9x13-inch pan.
    Top with coconut if desired.
Bake for one hour, or until a knife inserted in centre comes out clean. .

Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I feel sure I read somewhere last year that green tomatos are very sweet when fried........more so than red ones.
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
