I bought some fingerless cashmere gloves last week. They are seconds but really nice :)

Ooh lovely - I always keep an eye out for a good deal on them. I wear them every day Sept - June and they keep my hands functioning but the nature of the fabric does mean that they wear out. I have some recycled ones but they are thicker which is great in the depths of winter. These are thin and pretty for mid season wear.

I did also buy some linen shorts when it was hot (navy, old lady :) ) from MrM of all the unlikely places. I do try and buy long term things in the right fabrics these days. Finding the John Smedley outlet mill shop near Matlock was fatal but the four things I bought will last for years. Quality pence per wear, and a Vimes theory of boots investment.

We are supposed to be going for a run later, and part of me wants to 'forget' about dinner and plan it so that we collect fish and chips on the way home. NO NO NO NO I can't eat the batter, its expensive, its unhealthy and I have defrosted the pork. Still want to though :o I hope its not just me who does this?

Ladies and gentlemen of the debt free wannabe board, place your bets please

    Do the Redo family:

    (A) Go for a run, and eat the stroganoff and do a smug #soblessed post on Instafacebook
    (B) Go for a run, and get fish and chips, and just eat the fish and pretend it hasn't touched evil poisonous gluten
    or
    (C) Sit on bottom, drive to get fish and chips (still not eating the batter) and then open the £6 bottle of Aldee Prosecco which is actually surprisingly nice

Sorry - I'm the wrong person to ask for a sensible vote - it would have to be (c) for me!:rotfl:

:rotfl: I'm going with C. :rotfl:

I would love some Prosecco but think that might be frowned upon at 7 months pregnant. :rotfl:

  • Haha. Whilst I can appreciate how tempting thivgs can be, I loathe wasting food so I'd go with A to avoid that... But I'm also that weirdo that enjoys a bit of exercise for the feeling afterwards.

Just found your diary and read through bits and pieces so I'm pretty new to your journey.

I'll continue to check in :)
  • Oddly enough OH walked in and did 'really fancy fish and chips'. We are blessed/cursed with a good one in the village. I did at least walk to fetch them, and I cooked the pork so it didn't get wasted.
  • Starmummy, it's always bacon for me - never tastes as good as it smells
Seaside, I'm not great at resisting, but the wheat thing is really helping. I didn't eat the lovely batter.
Sashybo, won't be long now till you can raise a glass. I had the odd one (with Sunday lunch) but haven't they changed the advice to none at now?
Alicia, Hello. I hate waste too so I cooked it later in the evening.
  • Gluten free ramblings!

I'm still not in possession of any kind of diagnosis, but removing gluten is helping with my day to day symptoms so I am sticking with it for now. I don't actually like pasta or pizza very much so that doesn't bother me. The occasional lager has been replaced by wine. It's bread and cake that I suddenly miss, which is daft because I rarely ate either. It's mustn't rather than shouldn't which is suddenly making it attractive.

I tried some commercial GF stuff, the cake was inedible sweet so that was a no.

My experience with paleo and GF recipes has always been a poor replica of the original thing, rather than something delicious made from things I can eat.

Regular readers also know how faddy I am which doesn't help. I remembered about the cloud bread, but a savoury meringue isn't what I have in mind.

The first successful experiment has been the egg wraps I posted about on Seasides diary. Beat two eggs, season and pour into an oiled frying pan, leave them on low until they are cooked through. Let them go cold as use them like tortilla wraps. I had one again this morning with rocket, sliced tomatoes and Parmesan shavings. You could flavour the base - herbs, chillis, spring onions for example. I will find out tomorrow if they stand up to travelling as a packed lunch.

I was in Costa for work, and noticed that they had two appealing GF free things, mini bake well tarts and a raspberry and coconut slice which reminded me of the jam based slices I used to make. I like almonds and coconut. I don't mind the GF flour but it does make for an odd bitty texture - like shortbread when you add rice flour - so I want to use that in moderation where it is essential for a reason in the recipe. I need to go back to basic science of what purpose does any ingredient serve in the recipe rather than slavishly substituting like for like.

Thinking out loud, but I will forget where I got to if I don't write it down. Also need to do an update on plans. Head is full of work stuff though, and I am a goldfish.

Hi redo, yes they're always changing the alcohol recommendations. My GP says one or two won't hurt, towards the end with DS I had the odd half pint of Guinness because I had a real craving for it! :o

Having to watch what I'm eating with the gestational diabetes diagnosis now and really sympathise with people who have to avoid certain things in their diets. It's not so much the sugar I'm missing (although I have a terrible sweet tooth) as the carbs. :( Trying a few recipes with ground almonds/coconut flour instead of normal flour and so far so good.

Your egg wraps sound good, might be a good cereal alternative for breakfast for me as I can't seem to tolerate cereals anymore, they're sending my blood sugar too high. :( Things like boiled eggs are making me boke and toast with peanut butter gets boring fast!!
