Is working at McDs something you would do?

Absolutely. I worked at Burger King when I was 18 - as a vegan who'd never been in a fast food restaurant, you'd think I'd hate it, but it was actually one of the best times I ever had!
Anyway, you're much more employable with recent work history (anywhere) than without it. I actually applied at McD's when I was briefly between jobs, but was offered a new office job before I had time to accept the temporary position.
I also worked at Tesco last year, doing 3 hours every morning (7-10am) as extra pocket money in addition to my full-time Marketing job. I'm not even vaguely ashamed of that - I got paid for simple, honest work, and it helped get me into the strong financial position I now find myself in.
Your boyfriend's brother (and his Mum) need to get their priorities straight - if he's got floods of job offers, fine, but something is always better than nothing!Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

I think it says so much about the state of our society that perfectly able people who are without jobs and (I'm assuming) claiming benefits still think that they are in a position to refuse 'undesirable' jobs. At his age, I assume that he's not bringing up children, and you haven't mentioned any problem that prevents him from working, so what exactly is his contribution to society?
:rotfl:Shell you think the same as me, brilliant! My boyfriend works for a company that runs a course to get people on benefits and able to work into jobs. They are forced to go on these courses after being on the dole for 6 months I think. The trouble is the majority of them don't want to work (some do and all credit to them) they freely admit this to my boyfriend and it gets him down as he is trying to help them.Trying to sort my life out, and I'm going to get there!0 -
I can't find the wages??? But I'm guessing it was more than the £4.85 p/h I was on at 21 as a qualified nursery nurse.. :mad:Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

One of my dd worked in McD's while she was at college, it helped her to save up for the deposit on her first house at 18. She has a goal and will do whatever is required.
DD no 2 worked in BK, she wasn't happy, but that was mainly down to the other staff. It was a job and paid a wage.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

MERFE he can't drive.
He had an interview on wednesday, my boyfriend got home and asked him how it went his response was "I didn't go, I couldn't be arsed".
He just sleeps all day then gets up at about 5pm all his mates come round and they get stoned.
http://mcdonalds.co.uk/?f=y Look at those wages!!!!!
I lived in a shared house with 6 guys who all did this and worked at McDs to pay for their lifestyle!
They would do a shift, messing around with no stress, then come home and do bongs (still in uniform), then eat the burgers they brought back with them (they used to freeze the ones left at closing time, then microwave).
They'd loll around semi-conscious on the sofas and moan at me (I was a Care Assistant and the only girl in the house) until it was time for them to go back to work again.
And, because they had no real social lives, they always had plenty of money for video games, drugs / alcohol and yes, even savings accounts!!!
Sounds perfect for him.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

I wouldn't have a problem at all. I don't think there's anything wrong in saying that I have enough pride in myself to consider any job before resorting to benefits. That's not a slur on people on benefits - it's a slur on people who think that certain types of work are 'beneath' them, and that they have an automatic right to benefits just because they job in front of them isn't their dream job.
It's sad that some people think it's more noble to claim dole rather than take a job they think others might mock them over...
I've stacked shelves in KwikSave and Asda and worked and done jobs that a lot of snobs would turn there nose up at, because I have this dumb idea I want to provide for myself as long as I am able, and that benefits should be there for families who need them and have no other option, and to tell you the truth I had a bloody good time doing them - no stress about deadlines, performance targets, office politics.

Totally agree with you, gems. There are definitely some jobs that I wouldn't put at the top of my list of "must do's", but I wouldn't turn my nose up at most of them if doing them meant the bills got paid, I kept a roof over my head etc. That includes working at McD's - I work full-time, but if I needed the extra money, I'd work there on top, do cleaning etc. But I'm a good bit older than your boyfriend's brother - I know I've got a home to keep, & that it can't run without money, as I don't have easy access to my mother to tap her for food, money etc (not that I'd want to & not that she'd let me either
). When people are young (especially fresh out of school/college), they often think the world's their oyster & they can do so much better. They may well turn out to be right, but they've now got to face paying their way in life by whatever legal means necessary. Some people don't want to work hard for a living, so unless the job has additional perks (celebs, glamour, flexible working hours etc), they won't do it.
I think his mother is totally wrong to say he can do so much better - he clearly can't at the moment, because he hasn't held down any job for long. She should be encouraging him to work & develop a strong work history, not encouraging him to be choosy when (a) he's got no qualifications & (b) hasn't got a reference worth spitting on. No matter what she & he may think, he won't get a better job until he can prove he can do the ones he's already had for a reasonable amount of time. At 18, he may get away with the luxury of flitting from job to job, but a few more years of that & he'll be competing even more with other people for work, having shown he's not been able to apply himself. If he's not careful, he'll also find himself in a succession of minimum wage jobs while others his own age & younger are doing so much better. Mommie dearest may not have thought he'd end up working at McD's, but surely getting skilled at claiming benefits isn't something she thought he'd be doing either.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."
