Is working at McDs something you would do?

Or would you rather be on the dole?
The reason I ask this is because my boyfriends brother (18) left school at 16 with no GCSEs and since then has had a lot of jobs, but none for more than a few weeks.
He's been an apprentice mechanic, apprentice decorator, worked in offices and numerous call centres. His last job about a week ago was packing in a chocolate factory, it was 12 hours shifts....he lasted a day.
So last night while in McDs we and my boyfriend noticed they were recruiting so picked up an application form for him and gave it him.......his response was 'Funny b******, I'm not working there'. His mum was there at the time and told him to 'throw it in the bin, you're not working there'.
I was stunned, she went on to tell my boyfriend 'you wouldn't work there', I couldn't help but chip in with 'well my sister did' (true she did), I had to do my best to stop myself from saying what I really thought!
Later his mum came and told my boyfriend it was a stupid thing to do and that his brother needs a real job, he can do better than working there blah, blah, blah.

My opinion on this is a job is a job, I have worked 12 hour shifts packing, I worked as a cleaner while at uni and this involved cleaning the toilets! So what does everyone else think?
Trying to sort my life out, and I'm going to get there!

When my hubby lost his job last year he applied for McD's. He would have happily taken a job there instead of going on the dole, but he never even got offered an interview. I think beggers can't be choosers.

I would work there if it meant the bills got paid or whatever.

Also, I think taking jobs like this looks better on your CV than a period of unemployment.

I know a girl who worked at McD's for quite a number of years before getting in to recruitment. She's a cracking lass and said that it actually was quite a good job. The one bonus is that the high turnover of staff and the sort of people who work there means if you are half good the promotion prospects are good and very quick.

I think you're all right, it makes me so mad that he won't even try! I know it's not my problem as he isn't really anything to do with me it's just his (and his mum's) attitude absolutely infuriates me .

Dearbarbie have you seen how much managers get paid?

Hypno his (unedited) cv would look terrible to prospective employers, bottom line is I don't think he wants to work.

Even if he got a job there I wouldn't expect him to last very long, as it sounds like he hasn't been able to keep better jobs. I have worked in Burger King for about 3 months whilst I was at uni (I was ok on the till but when they started sticking me in the kitchen with a saturday rush I stopped going in). Could he not do Multidrop if he has a licence, may have to start through an agency because of his age, somecompanies don't let you before 21 because of their insurance but some will. My oh had problems keeping jobs as he would get bored till he done multidrop because he was mostly out on his own all day he prefered it, he has now done his HGV class 2 and gets paid a fair amount and next month is doing his Class 1 where he could then get a job paying 30000 a year. So there is hope if he can find something he likes.

He sounds very similar to my oh so I wouldn't write him off he is just trying out different jobs whilst young, and if he is still at home best to do it now. My oh did various factory jobs, panelbeating, bar work, was a dustbin man one summer, joined the navy passed out then left, he also left school at 16 with no GCSE but that is because school was not for him, he is much older now and more settled but so long as your bf brother is looking for a job and trying surely that's enough, unless he has big debts then I suppose needs must!
  • I would do whatever I needed to. I have cleaned toilets I have worked in roudy pubs MCd's would be no different it's just a job it doesn't define you.

Given the choice I would chose macdonalds over a call centre to be honest!

    | wouldnt as I am a veggie it goes against my ethical beliefs. I have never worked with food as I dont think I could stomache the smell of meat all day/night.

But I would think I could easily pick up a job in retail or bar work which I would do if it came to it.
