  • If it meant paying the mortgage YES I would. You cant pick and choose if you have commitments. I'd do anything (excluding sex work!)

Does his mother pay for his drugs? She is either very naive not to notice or happy to subsidise his habit....

His dole money pays for it! He supposedly gives his mum it all as soon as he gets it but I know that's not true. He always has cigs but I think his mum buys those, she can't afford to buy milk somedays but can always afford cigs .

My boyfriend has to pay £50 a week board, she says this is for food :rotfl:but I used to live with my boyfriend and spent £30-£40 a week *thanks old style board* between 2 of us and we ate VERY well. Some days he is going to work without any dinner as she hasn't got any food in.

LookingAhead yes they'll happily eat at McDonalds so why working there is so bad baffles me!

Scotslass - I know I had to wait til I was 15 to get a job in a shop (10 years ago!), until then it's thing's like LA suggests.

Back on topic, I have always worked to pay my way and even though I've never fancied McD's and have never had to work in a meat packing factory or anything like that, I have always managed to find a job in a shop within a couple of weeks of looking. I don't understand how anyone would choose to be on the dole rather than out at work, whatever the job, I'd be bored out of my tree at home. I don't know how much the dole is these days but I'm fairly sure it's a hell of a lot less than 37 hours at the minimum wage even, and I seem to think McD's is quite well paid (?)

If the brother seems to think the food service industry is beneath him I'm sure there are plenty of opps for seasonal retail work at the min....

Basically he can't be bothered to get a job really. He doesn't like working in a call centre as he doesn't like being on the phone, he got a job in an office but quit as he had to answer the phone!
I think at one point he was on £14000 a year which is the same as I get paid, but he quit that one too!

Oh yes they have no problem eating there, it's not some kind of moral dilemma they are having with the place they just think it's beneath him!

When he left school his mum told me she wouldn't have let him stay on at school anyway (the school didn't want him as he achieved nothing!) because the school was crap! Nothing to do with her son being a lazy git who very rarely attended :rotfl:. I suppose it's easier to blame someone else isn't it!

Basically he thinks his brother is stupid. I've worked really hard to get my boyfriend out of a similar mindset, he's not good with money and has relied on me heavily (£2800+ heavy) which is why I'm on this board!
He's gone through a lot of jobs as he likes to go out when he's been paid, if this is a weekday he won't get up for work in the morning and has lost many jobs because of this. He is now on his last chance with me as I'm sick of being with someone like that, if it happens again he's gone. But he is trying, I'm doing my best to re-educate him :D.

I see a lot of this where I live, families go generations on benefits and so the kids have no work ethics. They seem to know every benefit going and claim for all sorts of things that I would never think of (I know some couples: the man claims for being 'carer' to the woman while the woman claims as 'carer' to the man - the mind boggles!) and it does infuriate me to think that my taxes pay to keep them, but I would still much rather earn my own money.

Sounds like you've done a good job with your Boyf tho, can't imagine it's easy getting someone out of that mindset.

Sounds like it's filtered down (as Tete says) and perhaps you are the first real role model that BF has had when it comes to work ethic? Well done you and be strong! Hopefully your BF is on the straight & narrow now though.

Sounds like you can do nothing more with the Brother though. Not unless you want to take another one under your wing?

    Hmmm thought not. :D

I'm not sure I'm completely there with my boyf yet, hopefully I am fingers crossed! As for his bro, no thanks I do not want another to take care of I've got enouogh on my hands with one!

His mum does know exactly what she can get benefits wise......doesn't stop her getting paid for doing people's hair and nails though!
She also bought a £500+ computer and told me she'd got a loan from the council to pay for it. Told the council she needed the loan for a new mattress for her disabled husband (he has a bad back which is why he can't work) which was an out and out lie!
