Now I've read your reply I can see the need for a DP . The plus factor is he wont waste money so you are planning well !
Have you thought of Harrogate ? I stopped the York ones a few years ago . We'd been there many times and it a wonderful city but it's very hard work mobility wise with all the cobbles , slopes and wonky paving plus it is such a focus for tourists .
Harrogate is quieter , pretty untouched and has lots of little gardens with proper benches as you wander . If you've never been before Betty's Tea Shop is a must . The RV will go purple in the face at the prices but it's worth it . Buy him a Fat Rascal and shove it in his gob .
Northern expression there :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Just realised the journey to Harrogate will add over two hours travel time to add to the time it takes to get to Waverley and back . You chose wisely with York

It's quite complicated Polly. The main prob being that our hourly bus from Edinburgh up here stops at 7pm, after that there's only one at 9pm then one at 11.30pm. I don't want this to be an endurance event lol so York is the absolute furthest I can go. Am now looking at Newcastle as well though.. if there is anything nice to see and do there then I'll risk the accent
:D Fuddle will be in to smack me in the gob any minute now lol
Thanks Floss and Karcher xx0 -
MAR you can buy a ticket to any station in the land AT any station in the land for as long in advance as you want to. I buy my ticket to go to either of the girls from my local station and get a ticket issued to use trains at an entirely different station as the trains are more direct from there. Have the ticket in my purse for several weeks before I need to use it.
He Who Knows uses FIRST GREAT WESTERN to book tickets in advance (to and from anywhere in the country) and they post them to the home for free, RED SPOTTED HANDKERCHIEF is another company he uses who will post the tickets to the home but they charge postage costs. In both cases order and pay online and the tickets are mailed to you as long as you give them a weeks notice. Hope that helps.0 -
Mar , 1st time I have been on a train was a few weeks ago , and it was easy ... booking ref no put into machine at station ...tickets printed out ... jump on train ...
Go for it
Lots in newcastle, depending on what you want to do ? ... can find out for you if you give me ideas ....
If he doesn't want to go , will show you around myself .... although I don't have much of a local accent , so will have to practice :rotfl:

Mar For future adventures send him here then you can do all you desire . There are eight amazing classic bikes over the road from me right now . Chrome glittering in the sunshine as they wait for the others to arrive . Then I'll hear that roar as they set off on a ride out .
I'll be singing " I wanna be sixteen again " as they head into the distance .

Awh ty both - you're lovely xx :A:A
I made the first move, read out bits from Virgin trains site and got the usual reaction. The raised eyebrows, the incredulous expression, and the word "train" repeated as if he'd never heard of the things before.I have now regrouped and retired to a safe distance and am letting the idea filter into his brain... it will bug him and sooner or later he'll be forced to ask me about it. Then I'll say oh nevermind you didn't like the idea and I can just go on my own. Then I'VE GOT HIM

You can book online via Trainline.com and if you can't print the tickets they will either send them to you at an additional cost, or you can get them sent to your phone and activate them on the day of travel. I went to York fairly recently and have to say that the cost of the entrance fees etc. was really high if you are just going for the day and therefore can't spend much time in any one attraction. It was also hellish busy.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Ooh I like a good surprise mardatha. York is lovely but may need more than a day. Newcastle will only be a couple of hours from Edinburgh and the scenery is stunning especially along the northumberland coastline.
If you can, see if you can get a 1st class ticket - you get drinks and snacks to enjoy on your journey.
ETA - How about Durham?0
