  • Hester that would probably be how I would do it. With unlimited time and space I'd consider taking them down, taking them outside and beating them as they used to do with rugs. I think the Edwardians used to use a stiff brush in a downward motion and then collect the dust at the bottom, which also might work--I'd imagine it would be more effective on curtains with a nap--velvet, courderoy etc. and less effective on smooth ones where microfibre is probably the best.

So glad your first client is happy--it does help and word of mouth might get you more jobs! As for poorly behaved children in public...it is trying.

Hester, if giving them a good shake wasn't enough I'd have done the barely damp microfiber thingy too. I used to have one of those hand held rechargeable doofers that I used for cleaning the car. I bet you don't want to use up valuable space for one of those, though if you get a lot of cleaning jobs it may be a good idea to keep one of those in the car.

Well done you. Word of mouth is the best publicity you can get.

Good luck with your devious plan mar! Durham is lovely but be aware that if you want to look at the cathedral or the castle they are up a very steep hill :)

Has the RV always been reluctant to go far afield/do something different, or has it happened as he's grown older?

And so is the station!! But at least nothing is very far from anywhere else. Week beginning 1 October is Fresher's week and the following weekend is when all the other students return. It's very busy at the weekend because all the parents drop their little darlings off.

In my day you went by train and sent your trunk on ahead. Our college porters were ex-miners and they could lift a trunk full of books and stuff and just sling it over their shoulders!!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

oops, should refresh my page before posting, I see you've written off the idea. Though there is a little bus that goes up to Palace Green so you can walk round the Cathedral. They won't let you in the Castle in term-time

  • S o who remembers when it was a fashion to tile kitchen workgroups, I never liked the idea as I thought the grout would be difficult to clean. It is, I spent an hour today and only managed to clean approximately a square foot!
Tomorrow I shall buy more cheap toothbrushes as I've flattened two already.
    Chin up, Titus out.

Hester try the stainless steel scourers they sell in Wilko MUCH more effective than brillo pads. Hard on your nails if you don't wear gloves

  • Maryb, I have some fondness for being sent off to Uni rather than delivered. While most of my peers had tours, overnight visits etc. I was dropped off at the airport the first day of induction week, flew about five hours and arrived in one of the two largest cities in the US, got a shuttle on my own across town (a taxi was far beyond my means and the three bus changes required probably beyond my capabilities) and headed into a Uni I'd never seen before. I think it added to the adventure :D Of course this was only about 15 years ago. Many of my students either live at home or go home very regularly (I went home only for the summer break, it was too expensive at Christmas) and I sometimes feel they're missing out on the real experience. No mods and rockers cafes for my generation--although I roamed as a child by the time I was a teen the concept of not being at school, home or a nominated activity was considered unthinkable. I was never sure if that was on account of the trouble I might cause or the trouble that might find me. Probably should have been the former :rotfl:
  • Hester, grout comes up a treat if you make a paste of thick bleach and bicarb and apply it with a toothbrush. Of course you have to be careful with the bleach but it does really get grout sparkling. I always thought tiled kitchen surfaces were thought up by a non-cook. Who wants to roll out pastry on that????

Yep, I second that, bleach is the way to go to whiten any tile grout.

Loving the tales of youthful adventures!
My biggest adventure as a younster was visitng the soviet union when I was 18 (a school trip!), coming back on the ferry through the Baltic and discovering that Martini was cheaper than a bottle of cola :)
I have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.

    ?

Yes the hill is steep but Durham has a Park and Ride system and shuttle buses that take you right up to the cathedral.
