Oh, you rebellious children! In the sixties I was a staid old married woman.
My teenage years were the fifties and pretty grey. I do remember skipping a sixth form conference to go down to Southampton docks to see Bill Hayley arrive from America. Rock and Roll had just burst onto the scene. From then on the most adventurous things for us teenagers, (I'm not even sure that we were called that by then) was going to the new coffee shops. They changed hands and names so often that if you arranged to meet your friends the following day in the Man Friday, by the time you got there it was called the Moon River with a completely different decor. The one I remember with fondness was the Two Bare Feet, because it was the nearest one to my college and we had a sporting chance of getting back into College before curfew hour, after which of course, we all turned into pumpkins.
Whatever, we sat there in our jeans and sloppy Joe's, making our tiny glass cup of espresso, or "frothy coffee" as we called it, last as long as possible while listening to Rock around the Clock or Heartbreak Hotel on the juke box, another recent arrival.
It all sounds so tame now, but after the grey years of the war and the austerity following it, it was exotic and exciting beyond imagining. It was also the first time that teenagers claimed some of their own culture for themselves. Until then you were expected to be trainee middle aged adults, mini versions of your parents. If you were going to be rebellious under the age of 21, you did it in secret and privately.
All that seems like ancient history now but I don't regret a minute of it.I believe that friends are quiet angels

I do love you Monna! Here was me in this foreign country writing Gob yesterday and here today in your gentle southern tones you use words like Obdurate. Must be the North / South divide .:D
Your day yesterday sounds blissful . At 91 he sounds a gentle and inspiring soul . I often wish everyone could experience such caring shepherds of the soul . My view was formed from pretty harsh teachers and a very obnoxious Parish Priest . My mum put the fear of God , Nuns and Priests into us . Give me a child until he is seven says it all .
What plans are afoot for the apples ?
Back in a bit . Need to eat .

Ivy that's a no then, I can't do hills any more. haven't got any gears lol I just get slower and slower and then stop completely!
The RV has always hated going anywhere, furthest he will venture is a day out as long as he can get home by teatime. He's very hard going sometimes. The holidays we had only came about after rows and begging and whining and then screaming.
He wasn't going anywhere in a bus. Then he wasnt going anywhere in a train either. He counter attacks saying I'll take you in the car... then never does! One year I booked the big superfast ferry to Bruges and he went on as if it was the End of Life..... then enjoyed the damn holiday so much he wanted to go back again. Same when I booked to Ireland - he wasn't going anywhere on a plane and he certainly wasn't going to Ireland. What's there? nothing! - and planes CRASH. Well he whined all the way over until I told the stewardess in front of him that he was a big bad biker and acting like a wee scared baby.. that shut him up. Then he loved Ireland so much he wanted to go back.. He can be a real pain in the a$$ and marriage to him is like psychologial warfare sometimes0 -
Polly, I am so sorry. I tend to forget that not everyone is as fascinated by words as I am. It's an obsession caught from my Mum. My brother has it as well. My Dad used to throw his hands up in despair.
Likewise I am sorry if I brought back unhappy memories about religion.
I was brought up in a fairly fundamentalist church, full of hell fire and dire warnings. Fotunately my Mum was also a bit of a rebel and she taught me all about the laughing Christ who told funny stories, joked about with his disreputable friends, got right up the noses of the stuffy establishment figures and spread his message of love, acceptance and forgiveness.
My brother's name is Peter because Peter was Mum's favourite disciple. He was impossible, thundering about like a bull in a china shop, losing his temper, opening his mouth before engaging his brain, getting just about every blessed thing wrong, and he was the disciple that was chosen as the foundation of the Christian church.
That's today's R.E. lesson over folks.

Mar Just a little idea to get him in the mood . As he says he'll drive you do you ever visit "The Kingdom?" I was looking at the new bridge yesterday on the news maybe a wee step before the train . Just to prove the world wont end .
You may come across Elaine ( Memory Girl ) she'd set him straight in no time .

ps Would you like to go back to Ireland ? As he liked it ( eventually ) maybe a future plan .It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Monna You haven't brought up unhappy memories for me so don't fret . It was as it was and I have neither hurt or harm and admire all who find comfort in their faith . I know my mum went through hard times supported by her steadfast belief . Total overkill led me to find my spiritual self in other ways . "In my Fathers House there are Many Mansions "
You would never believe it to read some of my posts but I am also a Wordsmith . I have collected words all my life . Speaking of the past my life has had a never ending soundtrack of words and music . There is always a poem , quote or song that comes to mind .

Captain Hot Stuff and I had lunch out at a local pub, the first part of the lunch was spoiled by four very badly behaved children, screaming, shouting, running around so the waitresses were having to dodge them, to cap it all they then started to grab the salt and pepper from the tables a shook them on to the floor. All this time their parents watched on fondly! Fortunately they left shortly afterwards.
I did another boat clean this morning, all more money in the pot. The owner of the first boat I cleaned came over to say she was very pleased. I was glad as it can be difficult to know what people want.
On the subject of boat cleaning I've been asked to dust some curtains, with no vacuum available I settled for wiping them with a barely damp microfiber cloth, has any one any other suggestions?Chin up, Titus out.0 -
Hester Until a couple of years ago I used to use extra wide lint rollers . The sort with very sticky white paper . I haven't seen them recently but they may still be around . Used to be great for a quick freshen up of stair carpet and curtains .
I'm the queen of microfibre cloths . If you have a large one tie it over a sweeping brush or dry mop for now .
If you are going to be doing curtains often there are loads of things in Home Bargains and similar shops to help
