I didn't realise you were moving further North. I can see it might be different because being close to the coast as you currently are tends to make for less extremes of temperature even if you get the gales. Lots to keep you busy I can see. Will you have sources of local knowledge in allotment neighbours (though as Fuddle can attest, they can be a mixed blessing) or are there lots of derelict plots?
There's always a waiting list for plots round here but quite rapid turnover as people take on plots and find it's not as easy as they thought, so even though our site is fully let, there aren't that many plot holders who have much experience. Because DH goes in for very straight lines and his bean poles are wonders of engineering (he originally trained as one) we find people ask us about things and we really don't know any more than they do. We grow quite a limited range as we only have half a plot and with DH having been ill this year, we've only grown Charlotte potatoes, runner beans and courgettes. Though I have got some purple sprouting broccoli and spring cabbage plants ready to go in. We don't normally grow brassicas but thought we'd try this year so we have some green veg next spring if there are shortages because of Brexit disruptionIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Put fine nets over the brassicas..even net curtains from the chazzer will do....everything will getthem before you otherwise!0

We've been to the allotment plots a couple of times and met a few folk who seem disposed to be friendly and there are several plots not in use at the end we'd prefer. We put our names down for one on the day we made the offer on the house and were told we'd only be allocated a half one to begin with but that's fine. There is a nicely situated plot which is half empty and the other half was given to a newby at the start of the year and they've not touched it so there's hope that we may be able to 'prove ourselves' capable of working a whole one. Half is better than none at all.
The garden is of a size that if there is ever only one of us whichever one it is will be able to manage it and the front is all parking so I hope this is going to be our last move. The house has the advantage that it has a shower room on both floors and there is a decent sized room on the upper floor that is currently the study which would be a good bedroom if we needed to live on only one floor. The top floor also has access via a footpath serving 3 houses at the back which is on level ground and would mean we didn't have to use stairs at all. It's a sensible move as we age I'm just relieved now all the ends are in place ready to be tied up in the fullness of time and looking forward to a new life in a new place hopefully involving much more family time and some good friends and a social life, we shall have to work hard but it will be worth it.0 -
Thanks Tired Trophy will do. I bought some netting from wilko yesterday in fact. £2.25 for 6m by 4m whereas the garden centre wanted £1.5 a metre. Although it doesn't look as if it stretches to 4metres I have to say. We've got some blue water pipe to make hoops to stretch it over but what I can't find out is how tall purple sprouting grows so how tall to make the hoops. Anyone able to help?It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

They can be tall....table height and get taller in flower...ie producing broccoli0

Hmm I'm wondering if I need to use two nets to cover the hoops good thing Wilkos is so cheapIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Let's invite friends along, said CHS.
It will be fun.
You can have a rest and they can help with the locks.
He then invited his friend with a dicky ticker.
Guess who did the locks?
Guess who got stung by wasps again?
Good moving vibes to Mrs LW.

What a relief Mrs LW, you'll sleep better tonight!
It started off wet here this morning but has turned into quite a nice afternoon, some sunshine (which has been hiding down south) and a good breeze so the washing has all dried including the bedding that I've just put back on, unironed.
Poor you HH, I agree with Islandmaid, wine must be taken this evening!
I went to yoga this morning, why do I just want to sleep after I've been?0 -
Good news about the removals Lyn
Hester Yes, definitely wine. Or G & T. Or something.
Just contemplating having a mini-bottle of wine myself, but i expect it would make me even hotter.
Camelot Because yoga is relaxing?Or was today's session meant to be invigorating?
