Welcome Litha.
Hugs Monna. The plumber told the tenant to buy a hair catcher, use drain cleaner daily and bathe the dog in the garden, as the tenant sees the dog as her baby this suggestion didn't go down well!!
The neighbouring boater seems to have returned so he cat in true cat fashion has abandoned us.Chin up, Titus out.0 -
Hello Fencers,
have you got room for one more?
I have been living in 'interesting ' times lately and my resilience reserves are almost used up!
I'm not actually a new user, I've been an MSE user for just over 10 years, but managed to lock myself out of my account, couldn't remember my password, so decided to start again :-)
I love Old Style and Kon Mari and hope to get back on track.
PS Can anyone tell me how to get back to the old green layout? I much preferred it.
Linda x
Welcome to the Fence Litha, find a place to lean, grab a brew (or glass of something!) and something to nibble on and just jump in
No idea how to get the green back, I am lucky I still have it!Must use my stash up!0 -
I'm betting all of you sods are using up all the heat before I get there in September. So brace yourselves, September/October will be bloody freezing. In fact, if the last time I came April/May is anything to go by, it may well snow in parts that have not seen snow in years :rotfl:
I've just helped myself to a nice glass of whisky and am off out shortly for dinner and music. It's father in laws birthday. If that isn't cause for a drink I don't know what would be.
P.S I'm 100g off my target weight. And today in a charity shop tried on and bought a shirt in a size 10
Have a great evening and WOOT to the weight loss!Must use my stash up!0 -
Well done on your weight loss softstuff. Enjoy the feeling of being 100g overweight.

Argh...I just want to have a quick rant and I hope you lovely fencers won't mind too much. When I first started to work on saturated fat I was careful to read labels. I didn't want to replace it with highly processed carbohydrates, refined sugar or trans fats. Now, prior to this we ate very little in the way of processed stuff in an effort to be healthy. With the changes, we did decide a few exceptions might help to make life easier, so I allowed in a few treats that I'd carefully read the labels on...margarine(I love butter but I ate way too much of it. I don't like margerine so I don't eat much and it was supposed to be lower sat fat), a low fat ice cream, things like that. I was very careful to check for partially hydrogenated oils since they're even worse for cholesterol than saturated fats. I thought I was doing ok.
Then I discovered there is another sneaky way trans fats can be listed and found several things I'd thought were ok (not great, but ok for treats)...aren't. Turns out one of the ice creams is still good, but another masquerading as low fat has trans fat instead. The margerine has transfat (and I was really careful with this one as I knew it historically had a lot of transfat!) I even discovered a bit of bread with it in.
Now, I can solve this. I can swap to a different margerine, keep with the good brand of ice cream and carefully read any labels of shop bought bread (we usually just stick to a loaf of sourdough from the local bakery since it just has flour, salt and water).
I'm still so frustrated. To add insult to injury the government has known for a long time that no amount of trans fat is healthy and that they can be eliminated and they chose not to do it. (Denmark banned them in 2006 and saw an excellent reduction in cardiovascular diseases). The UK also don't make it compulsory to label it so mugs like me at least know what they're getting into.
Sure, I'll find other alternatives but really this almost seems an intentional deception in some cases. For all the things we don't know about healthy eating or aren't sure about this seems to be one that we are sure about!
Sorry. I don't get ranty very often (ok, I do but mostly my OH gets to listen).0 -
Sweetie, the food industry isn't interested in a healthy nation just as much profit as it's possible to make from sales and it seems that even though they constantly run their propaganda programmes about getting the nation fitter and healthier the government isn't interested in a healthy nation either! The only way you'll achieve the level of healthy ingestion that you feel is appropriate will be to make EVERYTHING at home and from your choice of healthy ingredients. It's a really big ask particularly with you both working full time and would take copious amounts of organisation, cash and time, it could be done but would be extremely hard. Perhaps limiting consumption of the things you find loathsome and not buying products that contain them very often would be a compromise that was acceptable? otherwise all the things you enjoy might come to be regarded as enemies and that would be very sad. Life ought to be about enjoyment sometimes, food is too important a part of being human to give up all those nice things lovey xxx.0

Oh I know you're right Mrs LW and it really isn't that much to read new labels for, really only a few items. I'm also being very strict at the moment and will ease if and when my numbers improve, but it does require more self-restraint that I'm used to. I'll get over it and eat well. I start my leave in about a week so I can dive into some new recipes and get started on filling the freezer and working it all out for next year.0

FPK You would be surprised how many surveys I do on "wellness" It is just trying to sell you, low fat loaded with sugar foods that don't taste very nice anyway, supplements you don't need if you are eating a proper healthy diet. Extra protein in everything, added vitamins to processed food, They only reason they put them in is because the cardboard they sell you as food has no nutritional value. I'm on a one woman campaign to stamp it out. Every one gets told they are wrong. I think all these lies should be banned.
You best way with the cholesterol is lots of fruit and veg and only whole grains when you do eat them. I can only say I feel so much better now I have got rid of sugar. It was hard work but now a lot of things taste too sweet. My treats now are extra fruit.
I thought the EU banned trans fats. Your fellow countrymen always use the EU when trying to ban trans fats.0 -
FPK it's a bummer isn't it! Sneaky ways to fill food up with stuff to replace whatever "nasty" has been removed. As MrsLW says cooking from scratch gives you food that you know whats in it, but I agree that time is an issue. Is the butter/marg for spreading?
