All the excitement over a bit of snow has me scratching my head in wonderment. We have been so cossetted in recent years that I think that people have forgotten what winter is for. Even here in the balmy south we expected at least one bout of snow a winter until fairly recently. I suppose it must be about 20 or so years since we had a properly cold winter, there's no doubt about it, I am getting old.

Last night was very windy. Not unusual here but the wind was coming from a different direction. Usually it is a west wind but at the moment it appears to be a 'wild north-easter.' Did anyone else sing that song in music lessons at school?

Lovely day yesterday with my mad old ladies. Too much food, too much laughter and not enough time to enjoy their company more.

MMF, I feel for you trying to get your father to understand that he can't go home. When my Dad was in the grim hospital ward he was desperate to get home. Once when I had taken in a bag with his clean clothes in he thought it was to pack up and take him away. When he finally realised that he couldn't come home with me he clung to me sobbing. My brother had to force his fingers away from my arms and drag me away from him. Six years ago and that memory still tears my heart to shreds.

Today I really must buckle down and start Christmas. I am ashamed that the cards are tumbling through my letterbox and no one has received anything from me. I have bought one present though, Pickle will be receiving her very own warm patch. Most people will be getting home-made edibles and I can't really do those till next week but a bit of planning wouldn't go amiss.

    THOUGHT FOR TODAY

    Oh, hello week.
    Let's do this.

Monna that made me cry and brought back some very vivid memories of my own xx

Oh Monna - that's absolutely heartbreaking, can only imagine how it still hurts. My mum died very suddenly and it was a huge shock but over the years I've realised that she had still been mobile and independent in her own home and that is a luxury denied to so many.
So many of you on this thread suffering in different ways and all I can offer is that you are in my thoughts and I am so wishing all of you some piece of mind.xx

  • My mum went suddenly too, we didn't even have time to say goodbye, which I regret to this day. I spoke to her on the phone on a Sunday afternoon to make arrangements to go up on the Monday morning, but she suddenly collasped late Sunday night and was gone. I don't know which way is worse. All I can offer is my support and my love to anyone who needs it.

Condolences VJ'smum. Thinking of both you and MMF at this time. It's just over a year since my dad died, and went to my aunt's funeral on Friday. It's such a miserable time of year anyway, that it makes the struggle to deal with the emotions and stress so much harder somehow.
We were very lucky that my dad died peacefully at home, and we were able to look after him ourselves. He was also very aware that he was dying and how long he had (he told the carer who came in to wash him on the Monday that he wouldn't bother her for more than three days - and he died on the Tuesday night). He hadn't wanted to live if he couldn't get out of bed, and he didn't suffer any of the loss of control at the end of his life that he'd dreaded.

MMF - I hope that your dad can settle in the cottage hospital and that it gets a bit easier for him and for you and your mum.

Afternoon Fencers...I have an O/S question and did a search but came up with nothing so I thought I'd ask here as it really doesn't warrant a whole new thread.

I have a white (well it's supposed to be white) shower curtain and the bottom of it is going a pink kind of colour and it also has little patches of black mold along the bottom hem.

Does anyone have an O/S tips on how to get it white again please.

    TIA :)

    Hi karcher

I wash mine in biological washing powder and add some washing soda to the washing powder. I then rinse it in white vinegar. I think that prevents it coming back too quick. You may get rid of it all together if you can remove all mold from the bathroom. I have not found any of the stuff that days it removes mold completely.

    Thanks NM

    I'll give that a try.

The bathroom itself doesn't have much mold, it's just the shower curtain. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

    Thanks again :)

karcher, I have used some stuff formulated to restore whiteness to net curtains. It worked wonders on some yellowing curtains in a house we moved into. I wonder if it would work on your shower curtain. Try nursemaggies method first.

  • Karcher.....If all else fails , then try vanish powder , its good to keep whites white , plus it as a stain remover in it .........I always use a scoop of " vanish" in my white washing , keeps it mega white .........My tea towels are well over over 3 years old and white as the day I bought them .........

We didnt have any snow , but rained instead , so so very cold though.......Ive got my open fire alight and some smelly candles burning and its so cosy , this weather is so depressing ......Keep warm all....
