  • Aah, the 'look'. I use it daily, usually works! I find a very subtle shake of the head puts the seal on things.

Hope things improve for you karcher, look after yourself.
You are certainly staying active burtha!

It's been a lovely day here, I put the washing out at 6.30 this morning amongst the mist and it was all dry when I got home at 5, just had to put the mattress protector in the TD for 20 mins. I'll tackle the ironing another day.

Is there a mother alive who hasn't used the 'look' at some point in time?

Unfortunately there are. Those parents who say, in a whining voice, Don't do that. Come on now. Etc etc, without sounding like they mean business! The kids hear the weakness and take no notice. They never get the look, at least not from their parents!

DDs say I have "B**ch face!" Unless I actually grin like mad I look really grim!

DH looked horrified once when I grabbed a toddler dd by her jacket and informed her "I am your mother, I am not scared of you and you will hold my hand and not run into the road and get killed!"

See, that's why all children's coats should have hoods that don't come off, to grab them by when they are about to run off or to pick them up when they fall over (and reins are an excellent invention too!) :D

You're right, of course. We've all seen them. Thinking of a scene enacted in town a while ago, young child (but older than toddler). Having an extended meltdown on the floor in the entrance to Boots. His mother sat cross legged on the floor beside him with the buggy and all her bags strewn around just making suggestions as to where he might like to go while everyone had to pick their way round them. I needed to get quite a few things so I was in there for about 15 minutes and she was still trying to coax him, totally oblivious to all the eye rolling and head shaking. There were, inevitably, a few who muttered that he needed a slap but what he really needed was to be firmly strapped into his buggy so he could go to sleep because he was obviously so overtired he just didn't know what to do with himself. How could she be so unaware of her child's real needs and think he could determine them for himself at that age?

My DS1 threw a tantrum in M&S when he was about 3 - my mother was with us too. I calmly told him 'When you've finished Darling Mummy and Nanny will be over there looking at the jumpers. The assistant looked horrified but I put my finger to my lips and just got out of his line of sight. He stopped, sat up and came running! A couple of weeks before he'd seen a child having a tantrum and the mother tempting him with the promise of sweets and chocolate! Not this Mummy - and he never tried it again.

I would leave whichever son it was on the floor and walk off - DS1 learnt a lot quicker than DS2, but it always worked ;)
