ETA I'm now further up the coast living near the lifeboat station. It's strange not to hear the Maroons go off since they switched to Pagers although sometimes they'll add the sirens. As the daughter of a former Royal Navy man and with other family that served in the Merchant Navy I hate to hear the call for the the lifeboat but am so glad those brave crews are heading out whatever the conditions for those in peril on the sea.

Well done with the running, Burtha!
polly - I have lots of Royal and Merchant Navy men (and 3 cousins who were in the WRNS) on my mother's side of the family
OH and I had our first vaccinations this morning12 -
I'm glad you've both had your first jabs ivyleaf.Mum and Dad were from large familes. A couple of the uncles were in the army some in the raf but living near a major sea port which was a lifeline during WW2 most had joined the navy. My dad had run away to sea long before school leaving age after his mum died young. Eventually he ended up in the Royal Navy escorting the merchant convoys on the dangerous journeys to pick up and bring back food and other much needed supplies during the war. Often dad's relatives were on those merchant ships while the Royal Navy proteced them and the RAF fighters flew overhead. Wherever they sailed from those highly organised convoys helped win the war.I was born after the war but learned the words of " Eternal father strong to save" at a very young age and would often lie in bed at night singing it when I heard the foghorns and sometimes that the boats were out for those in trouble.I say it in my head now when because of instant news I know the boats are setting out from various parts of the Irish ses coast and I wait until all are safe and home.It always upset me that though the RAF and Royal Navy were honoured for their convoy duty the Merchant Navy weren't for many years although the lives lost were high. A few years ago there was a ceremony at the spot the convoys set sail from and possibly at other ports. They were finally recognised and could be represented at the annual rememberance in London. It was a long time coming.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Brilliant Mar/Ming. Lie down in a darkened room. I'd bring you a fan and some sweeties but Wee Nicola wouldn't approve and I'd be dubious about any proffered refreshments.I'm waiting for Man U to take to the field at 8pm. The three eldest are red hot Liverpool and youngest and I red hot Man U.The past few years have been "interesting" especially since Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy after 30 years of waiting. Them ha ha we've won the cup.. Me remind me who won the first premier league trophy and how many times since. The emails were awful last season but they've gone very quiet now apart from that was never a penalty, we were robbed etc. I've told them they need a Marcus, a Bruno and many others but they can't have ours. I shall see what happens tonight. it's quite tiring as so many matches are being played close together. Was it your Father or Brother that supported Southampton monna? You'd have needed to cover your delicate eardrums if you'd been here when they played ManU . The air was a bit blue.pollyx.It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Pollyanna, it was my father. He came from an old Southampton family so supported the Saints all his life. My eldest was a born again Liverpool fan. Still is. When Liverpool were playing Southampton the phone was red hot. I seem to remember that a black armband was involved at one point.
At Dad's funeral we all left to a brass band playing, When The Saints Come Marching In. He would have loved it.
I sometimes think that if I had really listened to every conversation I had with my menfolk I would be a walking encyclopaedia on football, Formula 1 and the internal combustion engine.I believe that friends are quiet angels

When The Saints Come Marching In was a lovely way to say goodbye monna.I don't recall a black armband but turf wars have raged here over decades. It's always irritated me that Liverpool FC have the best anthem in football. I watched Michael Ball and Captain Tom singing it and it is a good motivational song.I remember Carousel so think of it as that. Gerry Marsden- RIP- sang it well and the Mersey Ferries played it while crossing the river.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
