  • My 5 for last week.

    1. Working most of it. The pleasure being that it is nearly done and I have 5 shiny new days to tack on to next year's holiday allowance.
    2. Finally getting through to OH that 2 people cannot eat or store Stilton wheels, vegetable mountains or cakes that would feed an army. I never baked this year and the sky didn't fall in!
    3. Receiving lovely gifts. Books and fizz.
    4. Booked a weekend in beautiful Ambleside. Love that place.
    5. Vermin problem almost nil. I suppose a rural problem but very disappointed with the council.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Games! Games! How & loves them :-), always have and that is one of the sorrows of being an only child and long solo now, or far from those with whom I custiomarily mah-jong on anniversaire[next week]. Can't whizz back to Spain, esp. as one player is about to enter hospital, Op. planned, awaited.
Anyway, still love Pass The Bomb[last year's vicarage newbie], Supremacy[my grandfather's WWI set], Totopoly[ old NZ version}, old warfare game, Strategy, again a family one,WWll - noit a modern version, euchre[card game taught by/played with beloved Poppa, as were most], vintage Magic Robot[desired by & from other children;s 1950s parties; acquired by & circa 2005], oui to Carcassonne and there's a great farming one which I left in France, shovelling the stock and crops around, then contending with weather/markets etc.], backgammon, vintage Go!, vintage London travel game, vintage NZ ditto:-).....loads and loads more.
    Oh Exploding Kittens, of course.
Battleships is still brill pencil and paper game, fancy set-ups unnecessary - as is Sprouts:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprouts_(game)
Russian Bank is an evil 2-pack, 2-player patience. Assume every household has the indispensible Hoyle's Book of Games :-)?
    #
    1. Had a total laze day yesterday, guilt-free:-)

    2. Hearing our dear departed local Clive James on R4[all week both via repeated Point of View broadcasts and his own abridging and reading of Unreliable Memoirs. Much of that 40s/50s just post-war childhood speaks to &, despite the Tasman Sea between us.
    Relish them all:

    and

Hadn't realised a parishioner's daughter helped run his wonderful site for years, which I have gone to often. It's a generous, fabulous offering. PLEASE READ his introduction, at least:
    https://www.clivejames.com/

    3. A propos of the above, a present from Vicarage was his glorious book of poems which contains Japanese Maple, heard, read by him, several times since his death. Had this volume with me at Town of Gown cinema and Little Women. This and Sentenced to Life mesh perfectly. Recommend. I know McCulloch and I both posted this elsewhere, independently, as did many.
Then, the lush, honeyed treat of Horatio Clare's voice, instant love years ago,
    and writing:

    4. Fine days here, but on edge for Australia and many known there, not to mention mhags' dd. Can't get through to area I need. . Equally, don't want to be using lines/comms needed by services there.

    5. Treated self to more books than I seem to remember treating self to!, each time another package has arrived over last week:-))) Only the Banksy volume to come now

Time For Lights Out - Raymond Briggs

Judge Hale was terrific on a service, taken by our terrific poet/priest/rocker Malcolm Guite, from Girton, more old stamping ground, Great listen, fabulous hmusic, on a dark night drive.

Still need answers to Hurrchhrrs characters questions please - Frith, DD. Lainey? Just hearing Kirsty/Helen stuff as we speak.....
Big Welcomes FF. As others have said, this is a terrific thread. Had to sneak a look to see how much of that saying you used....really like your abbreviation turned imprecation:-)

  • Just thought I’d update whilst I’ve got a spare half an hour, family arriving today so another mammoth cooking session today.

    Yesterday’s pleasures

    1. A long lie in, didn’t wake up until 10am.

    2. Brisk walk in the park with the pooches.

    3. Meal plan sorted until Friday, then back to normal shopping routine.

    4. Ate far to much chocolate....whilst researching a detox and looking at hot yoga classes. Oh the irony

    5. First alcohol free day since 24th December and I feel so much better for it.

I love Christmas but looking forward to the New Year now, it always feels like a new / fresh start time to review life goals and redefine priorities. I will start the new year by taking all the Christmas decs down in the morning followed by a nice long walk with Mr.M and the pooches.

Thanks for the games suggestions so far. Haven't played rummikub for a long time, nor indeed Mah Jong (xoh has taken the mah jong set but it was hers so i guess that's fair!) so what of the last day of the decade for Dundee Doll?
    1) packed a flask, walked the dogs up to the top of Balgay Hill to watch the last sunrise of the year
    2) bought 2 mince rounds and sausages from the butcher (wasn't sure how many around for tomorrow and didn't order steak rounds but mince will be lovely)
    3) mum was going to mr t so cadged a lift as needed to return some half-baked bread which clearly had a pin hole in the packing. bought fizz for tonight, milk and some ys stuffed mushrooms. We had the stuffed mushrooms for lunch - yummy - then the brandy baskets and brandy cream for pudding (we'd been too full after christmas dinner). i gave her the remaining brandy baskets and cream to take home :D
    4) missed the sunset as was busy decluttering kitchen drawers but the sky still marvellous colours as i gave the boys their last walk
    5) ds and his gf arrived with dd2. (dd1 has gone to a friend's) all three are here to see in the new year :D
Signing off for this year with a poem I've had since 2000 - no idea who wrote it, and i've had to change the ending. mhags you'll be pleased to know after 21 years in Bonnie Dundee I can understand it :D

A guid New Year tae ane an' a

That ur bidin in wir city

Happy Hogmanay DD and to everyone else a good NYE

An odd day that feels like it’s went on for blooming ever.

    Australian guest arrived.

Blooming chilly but blooming pretty. Blue sky.

Went as far as Tesco ...seemed like everyone else had same idea. It was so busy, it’s closed for a whole day. Bought lots of veg for being a non meat eater. Used a gift card I’d been given for Christmas so I was only £4.00

Home and son lit the fire. He has his uses. I’ve just woken up almost boiled downstairs! Much cooler upstairs.

Had takeaway for tea. Stuffed ( hence falling asleep ) last meat meal for a while!

My mother called...’hello?...oh it’s you?’ ...yep you called me! To tell me the boy wonder ( brother) had taken her out...I wonder if she calls him to tell him when I’ve cleaned her floors etc...anyway...breathe!

The dog...I put bread out for birds and he scoffed it! So I put the end slice out...and he had to watch them through the glass! He was glowering at the birds.

A little wren and a robin in my herb pot at back door at the same time. Something a bit magical I thought.

Thanks for sharing with my year and for sharing yours. I hope 2020 brings happiness...sometimes we have to look hard for it. That it brings hope. A very unsettled world around us but still much good being done. That we have financial stability...we might not be rich but I think we all know how to strreeeetch a penny. That we have each other. I often think friends who just haven’t met each other yet. It’s good that we can laugh and share and at times cry and reach out to each other and that here we have a safe place to do so. I’ve been writing here for over 9 years...that’s a lot of what I had for dinners and loads of laundry!

    Happy New Year!

    Pleasures for today (NYE)

    1) A lie in.

    2) Tidied, cleaned bathroom, changed 1 bunkbed, washing done.

    3) Hens OK.

    4) Part baked rolls for lunch.

    5) New Years Eve party - my brother and my school friend! Bigger son had spent hours making the curry and we also had naans, rice, Bombay potatoes and papadums. Played Settlers of Catan then bowling on the Wii.

    6) Took bigger son to his friend's then picked him up at 2am.

    7) Quite looking forward to starting my New Year's resolutions. Strange that bigger son will be 20 this year, and smaller son 17.

    Happy New Year Lovely People!

& Archers newbies.......Philip is Kirsties new chap and Lee is Helen's new chap. Neither relationship is remotely believable :rotfl:

Last nights games were Scrawl and Blockbuster. Excellent fun!

    Last day of 2019

    1. Returned a purchase to Lidl. Too much stuff! Did not need it.

    2. Made cheese straws to take to NYE gathering.

    3. Watched back to back episodes of the Repair Shop. (Mr Jay Blades ). Only just seen it on Catch up, so we have lost about 10 episodes :(

    4. Collected DD from work early and continued on to wine bar to meet friends.

    5. Back to their house for buffet and Hootenanny (Jools Holland ). Played games after New Year. Much fun:D

    Glad 2019 is over.

    Happy New Year! :j
