It's easy to look up/think what to do in an earthquake right now as we're not in one ... but if everything's suddenly shaking (especially if it wakes you up and you're disorientated and in the dark) ...different ball game.
One ponders on these things, sometimes!Sister & family flew to Kos yesterday afternoon.
She's fine but shaken - literally and metaphorically.
Said the movement went on for a couple of hours.
Ooer! Scary!
Complete off on a tangent, does anyone remember a series called "Shine on Harvey Moon" (sic again), in the 80s?
I loved it. It was bittersweet, slightly humorous, and depicted the life, just postwar, of an East End family relocated to a prefab somewhere.
(I thought of you, Sue, and wondered if their pre-fab looked anything like yours).
It was a great series, with Kenneth Cranham, Linda Robson, Maggie Steed and Elizabeth Spriggs.
I wouldn't mind them repeating it.(I just lurve spiders!)

.
I remember being aware it was on the telly; it was a programme my parents watched, but I went out.
1982-1985 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_on_Harvey_Moon
I was 21-24, so not to be found sitting in the living room with mum/dad watching their choice of telly programmes0 -
I remember it but I think we were living abroad for a lot of the time it was on. I'd like to have a chance to watch it again. It might be available on DVD, but if it is, I bet it's expensive!
ETA Looking at the dates PN says it was on, we were actually living here then, but perhaps there was usually something else on "the other side" that we watched instead. There was rather less choice of "other sides" in the early 80s....
The Drama channel is showing When The Boat Comes In, four episodes at a time, but I haven't watched it because I missed the first batch of four episodes and am hoping they'll start it over again when it's finished, iyswim0 -
Anybody remember a mid 60s show "Branded"?
I remember that being on.
The theme tune sang "All but one man died, down at Bitter Creek - and they say he ran away.... what do you do when you're branded and you know you're a ...."
While that sings you see US army officials cutting a man's uniform buttons off and snapping his sword in half and sending hm away.
Can't remember all the words, but the idea was: A US soldier was fighting a big battle against indians and everybody except him died. The reason was because he was raised by indians and they'd let him live. As he'd lived the US army said he must have deserted.
I was too young to remember any of the story lines/programmes, but the intro tune stuck in my mind.
Wiki says 65-66: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branded_(TV_series)
Which says it was:All but one man died
There at Bitter Creek
And they said he ran away.
Branded!
Marked with a coward's shame.
What do you do when you're branded?
Well, you fight for your name.
He was innocent
Not a charge was true
But the world would never know.
Branded!
Scorned as the one who ran.
What do you do when you're branded,
And you know you're a man?
Wherever you go for the rest of your life, you must prove
You're a man.
He is then sent out of the fort where this occurred, and the gates are closed behind him.
Youtube opening scenes, in colour (of course I never saw it in colour)

Yes I've been watching 'Boat'. I missed the first few, but caught up by watching them in my iPad and then switched to my recordings from the TV. Series 2 starts tomorrow on Drama.
I think series 1 is still available to watch on Drama on the UKTV App.
Just checked..... yes it is.
Pastures, I don't remember Branded. Perhaps it clashed with something else, in those pre-TV recorder days!(I just lurve spiders!)

Rain here today. Lots and lots of it. Hoping it isn't going to be a repeat of 2007. :eek:Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
silvercar I've just re-read today's posts and been reminded of your sister and her family. So glad they're all right, but it must have been a horrible shock
I remember my line manager went with her family on holiday to Cyprus and there was a quake while they were there. Their hotel room's balcony was badly cracked and they were very shaken. When they got home, it hadn't been reported over here at all!
I remember Branded being on - my Dad was a fan. I didn't watch it myself, but I remember the bit at the beginning where Chuck Connors stood looking stricken but noble as he was stripped of his buttons and epaulettes. I don't remember the song though.0 -

I've spoken to her now, there have been after shock tremors all day.
The fire alarms went off when the earthquake occurred and they all had to leave the building. So they spent most of the night outside! Some damage to the building but nothing major- fallen light fittings leaving glass everywhere etc. A lot of the hotel guests are talking of sleeping outside tonight!
I did suggest they may be safer indoors, but apparently they weren't allowed back in the building for hours last night.
they are thinking of coming home, but I doubt they could get a flight.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
