Main roads were bad too.....and the paths? Like a bleeding skating rink.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I'd turned my heating off last night, using the thermostat, I'd thought "warm enough now, turn that right down so it doesn't turn itself on again - I can choose when it's cold enough to go on again", only I then fell asleep, so the heating wasn't on all night.

It didn't get that cold here though, to be honest. Yes it's a hard, solid, frost out there with frozen icy water etc.... but it's OK inside, just down to about 12-14 or so, so "I hardly noticed", in fact I didn't notice until I went outside in just my T-shirt ... and stubbed my rollie out in the usual dish of water and it was solid. :)

IOW you stubbed it rather than, as expected, dunking it :rotfl:

Sue, what do the numbers in your signature, referring to The EDS, mean?

    Re. Heating:-

Is there any definitive answer as to whether it's better to put the heating on only when you need it, so that the house has to heat up from cold each time, or better to have it ticking over on a moderate setting the whole time?

I know there are a lot of variables to consider, like degree of insulation, age of house etc., but I would have thought there would be a general protocol.

If by "better" you mean "cheaper" then it's better to turn it on only when you need it. The total amount of heat you need to pay to supply to the house is equal to the total amount of heat the house loses to its surroundings. During any given minute, the amount of heat lost by a particular house to the surroundings depends on how much hotter the house is than the outside. If it's closer to the temperature outside, it doesn't lose as much heat, so you don't have to supply as much.

However, you should never let the house get down as far as freezing, because water expands when it freezes, which is why freezing pipes crack, and then leak when they thaw. If you have no way of turning the heating on remotely as you are on your way home, and don't want to arrive to a bitterly cold house, you may choose to keep it not too cold even while you're out. If you have things in your house (animals? antiques? piano?) that don't respond well to big changes in temperature, again, you may choose not to let the place get too cold even when you're not in it.

I have a Tado, which relieves me from ever having to think about the temperature. It knows when I am in the house, and turns the heating on. It knows when I go out (if I take my phone, which I always do, because it's attached to my keys) and turns the heating right down to "just don't let the place freeze" level. It knows when I am on my way home, so it turns it on in preparation for my return. It knows which hours I intend to sleep, and turns it down to sleeping temperature for those hours. I can override it from my phone or laptop if I change my mind. It cost a bit, but I love it and I'm glad I got it. :)

I believe there are additional criteria applicable to electric underfloor heating that means having it on all the time is advisable, but I don't know much about that.

Sue - I love your new sig. :D

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Talking of sigs... is this too long?? I can't see how to get all the info in if I make it any shorter.

Not too long, but the print is very small.

I like your two colour approach.

Pot. Kettle. Black. but I think bold and not italics is easier to read.
