We have a couple of inches, enough for church, carols and karate to all be cancelled.

Our church was still happening. It's a town centre church, and most people don't live particularly close, and drive to church. There were only a tiny fraction of the usual number of people there at the start of the service, but it was reasonably full downstairs (but hardly any in the balcony) by about half way through.

DS was on the visuals desk this morning (with a computer to project all the words to the songs, plus notices, and any slides the speaker decides to have for the sermon), so he had to be early. Usually, when that happens, I take him for 9:30, come home and eat breakfast etc, and then go in with DD for 10:30 when it starts. I didn't want to do that this morning, though, so all three of us went in for about 9:50 - late for him and early for us. It wasn't too bad. We've got a few inches here, and maybe an inch or two in the centre of town, but the roads had been gritted, and the cars were driving sensibly - slowly and with big gaps between cars - so the driving wasn't too scary. I'm not going out again today, though.

DS and DD are both hoping for their schools to be closed tomorrow. I am happy to know that Aged P is safe and warm somewhere where there are able bodied not-so-aged people to look after him.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Still snowing, now looks like a winter wonderland yet 3 miles down the road, less as the crow flies (my parent's area), it's just grey and wet.

Still just grey and wet here too, but at least it's not as windy.

The sun tried to break through but gave up!

After Tuesday evening, I won't have to drive anywhere until the New Year, so it can do what it likes then!

My Met Office page is back up. Looks like tomorrow will be the coldest day, and there might be some sleet for a couple of hours, but that's as bad as it gets.

Lydia, the grounds of Aged P's mansion must look lovely!

Tried to go out today. Snow was higher than my axle so getting anywhere was impossible with my car/sled. Stayed in instead.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

DKs are very excited as both schools are closed tomorrow :(

We certainly didn't have that much snow here just a few miles away (assuming you don't drive a ferrari), went out this pm but took the 4x4, I think we would have struggled in the fwd on some of the hills, lots of abandoned cars.
    I think....

I think we are a bit higher up here,on top of a ridge, but even so the difference is quite surprising. Maybe the wind had made the snow drift a bit.

My car isn't a Ferrari, if it was it would certainly stay in the garage during snow. Lamborghini has built its first 4x4 mind:

One of my brothers lives in St Albans and said they had 6 inches of snow and couldn't get the car out.
I have to say when we lived in the Tyneside/Durham area that would have been normal snow and wouldn't have stopped us doing anything!

Yes, I must ask him to take a photo of the view from his huge bay window. :)

It was more like 10" here. It was about 6" at 9am, but just kept snowing for another 6-7 hours after that.

Have you had a play with Europeana yet? They are running a transcribathon to transcribe WW1 cards, letters, etc. Didn't know if that would be up your street.

Doesn't sound like my thing. I've only a passing interest in "the easy bits" of WW1 based solely upon what people in my tree were doing ... so nothing furren.

Re the newspapers - I followed the links you provided, for my "town of interest" even the BL have big gaps. It looks at first glance as if they have up to 1930, but then nothing really until 1962.

I'm looking, in particular, for "an article in a local newspaper" which was published at an unknown date between, say, 1945 and 1965, probably closer to 1945-1955, but could be any date. Plus, of course, the "random/interesting finds" where you discover somebody in the tree in court for some naughtiness ... perchance a peek inside their lifestyle if their crime was published on a quiet news day.

Morning all. It's a tad parky this morning - my greenhouse thermometer is telling me there was a minimum temperature overnight of -5C so it was probably a degree or two colder outside. There was certainly a reasonable layer of ice on the top of the water in one of my rainwater storage bins, even with the lid on.
No wonder so many of my plants are looking a bit frazzled :-(
