Fraud story:
Somewhere, probably many thousands of miles from here a credit card was cloned. The card details were then sold (I assume) to someone who then used the card details to log in to the account online and change the password to the account. (We know this is possible because that's how we changed the password again once we knew of the fraud). They could also see the email address used for the account; half see to be accurate, but with the card in front of you and a little bit of knowledge of popular ISPs in the UK it is easy enough to work out what the astericked characters are.
They then hacked into the email account and changed the password (this is the bit we don't know how they managed it- asked here but no answer!), so they could then see and delete the emails that say account for shop Y created etc and password for said credit card changed.
Greed being the root of all evil, the first transaction they tried was for over 10k! Cue immediate fraud alert by the credit card company. card stopped. Except the fraudsters kept trying to gain access to the now stopped credit card and the shop account.
Hours later we realised the email account wasn't working and changed the password, where we see an email from the shop that the account password has been changed (don't know why they used the same email address, but they did. So I phone the shop and they were unaware that the account payment had been blocked or that any fraud was involved with the account!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Was the card stolen?Doesn't sound like it to me
We used that card in quite a few restaurants abroad, so possibly one of the chip & pin machines were compromised, or someone noted the number from the receipt copy and memorised the code off the card. It wasn't stolen.
We can understand how the online account was hacked, if someone had the card details. We don't know and are concerned how someone managed to hack into the email account.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Could the card details and email address have been compromised at the same place - perhaps a hotel reservation system? Possibly or perhaps via an open wifi hotspot?
Suprised the car account could be hacked on the phone without a password or considerable knowledge of your personal details.I think....0 -

We never log in to that email address remotely. The emails download to my phone automatically, which was the sign something was wrong when my phone started getting "wrong password" messages.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I'm guessing you used the wifi in the hotel, and that leaves room for a 'man in the middle' attack if the hotel systems have been hacked. You don't even know for sure that the email app you use encrypts the password. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

We did use the hotel wifi. This all happened after we were home. We only used the credit card when we checked out, having charged everything to the room prior to that. So they would have had to capture the email address and password and then hold onto till after they had the credit card details and found out that the credit card was attached to one of the emails.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Where is everyone???Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Where is everyone???
Well, I'm still coughing my guts up. And wheezing.
