So many questions lol - I'll help RM out by answering a few...

    As far as I know:

You just pay the £44.99 and with that you get a Nokia 7600 on the 3G network with a sim card loaded with £15 of credit. The sim cards alone sell for around £20 on eBay which means you are getting the phone for around £25! It is crazy!

The phone can easily be unlocked as it is a Nokia. That means you don't have to use it on 3G. If you need to get the phone unlocked, Unlockme.co.uk is great it has free software you can download to help you unlock phones or alternativly you can sign up to the forums and ask someone to give you the unlock code. Go here: http://www.unlockme.co.uk/unlockme.html to take a look.

If you are on 3 already then it couldn't be easier Spikey - just pop your current sim card into the new Nokia 7600 and away you go!

Hope this info helps PM me if you need any more.

these are not as easy as other nokias to unlock and get working properly as they have a gsm menu taken out and useing a code to unlock it will not do the job right they need to go on a pc with the right sortwere and hardwere to unlock them properly

Yup...realised that earlier today when someone else mentioned it in this thread. To be honest, I only checked in this board and the "Quick! Grab it while you can" board before deciding to post.

Should anyone feel that this tip is worthy of a monthly nomination, be sure to credit Sean as the first to these boards with the info.

I'll amend my original post to point to the earlier thread as well, for ease of cross-reference.

so what exactly does unlocking it online actually do then? If anything...

    my question remains :(

If you use a online unlocker 99% of the time if you dont know what you are doing you will damage the proramming and then the phone will need to be reprogrammed.

The ONLY best way to do it is by a pc and a lead and then reprogramme it. I got 5 phones today from CPW in Portsmorth, Fareham and Gosport

And it will cost me to send it to someone a fiver i was told....

  • my question remains :(

Unlocking physically allows SIMs from other networks to be used in the phone. However, the phone is set to always try and search for a 3G network. If you try an Orange 2G SIM in the phone, for example, it may fail because it tries to log on to Orange's 3G network which, while it exists, you don't have permission to access with that SIM.

There is a process you can go through (via someone who has the appropriate hardware) that reveals a hidden menu item which allows you to force the phone to always look for a 2G network, thus allowinig it to operate with any 2G SIM.

So has anyone here actually bought a Nokia 7600 on 3 and managed to sort it out, via unlocking/ reprogamming, such that it works on another 2G network?

Yes - plenty of people on uk.telecom.mobile (a usenet newsgroup for people interested in mobile phones) have done just this.

So as I understand it, there's no problem unlocking the phone via the correct calculated unlock code. However, if you then put in a 2G sim with a provider that also transmits 3G and the phone picks up this 3G signal, then the phone will not work. When it no longer picks up a 3G signal, it works fine. The only way to sort this glitch out would be to get a hard reset of the phone. Is this more or less correct?
