I tend to recieve several of these a month, any that start with Dear Ebay Member or Dear Paypal member are bogus, official emails will either have your name or ebay id on them, if in doubt forward the email as is to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@paypal.co.uk and they will reply letting you know if its legit or not.

there are many of these spoof ebay emails going round at any given time and this isn't a new one as far as I know. The best thing to do is to report it to Ebay.

i have just had new ebay spoof today.
it went on to say someone had reported me to ebay for fraud for selling a counterfeit gift certificate in US dollars....
obviously i have never sold anything like this. it also added if you have not sold this item please click on the link below to reactivate your account.

but at first i thought !!!!!! as it is so different to the usual scams going around, but the link to reactivate the account soon made it clear that its a spoof.

but the wording was so different... so please be aware of this new one......
• Hi Guys .... Dont Know if this is a new scam to try and get details of my ebay account ..... Today I received an email claiming to be from ebays trust & safety team stating that a bid I had placed on a certain item had been cancelled by them ...No explanation WHY !
When you click the number supplied it directs you to your 2 security boxes which you have to sign in to observe the item they claim to have cancelled ( I of course did not punch my names in ) ...

When I looked at the item via ebay it directs me to a fender light in america ..... something I have DEFINATELY NOT placed a bid on ... So I can only assume this is a new way of trying to get people to sign in and give their accout details..... AGAIN it does look very authentic

They always do look authentic. It definitely is a scam, ebay and paypal will only ever email you and address you by name and NOT "dear ebay/paypal user" that's the giveaway. I've now set my email filter rules to automatically delete any incoming email that begins "dear ebay or paypal user".
Just forward to spoof@paypal.co.uk

A friend of mine, a newbie ebay member, did actually fall for one of these a while back. He phoned me straight after as he knew I was a more experienced ebayer, cos something obviously didn't feel right to him about it. I told him to sign in and change his password but when he tried to, they'd already accessed his account and not only changed his password, but it didn't recognise his email address either, so they'd changed that too.

I advised him then to cancel the credit card he had registered with ebay/paypal straight away, which he did. He's not fallen for any since then though!

My partner keeps getting spoof mails too - which is strange, as he's never had an ebay account at all!

It looks like ebay have actually decided to do something about spoofs - this was in the 'Message Alert' section of My Ebay when I signed in tonight.

Dear eBay Community Member,

We’re pleased to announce updates to My Messages. It now provides you with a secure place for:

Important account alerts
Protection against fake (spoof) emails
Customer Support correspondence
Member-to-Member communications
Use the links above to read more about each of these new features.

Protection Against Fake (Spoof) Emails
With My Messages, you now have a definitive, legitimate source for any communication from eBay that affects your account. Whenever eBay sends you an alert or message related to your account, it will be duplicated in My Messages.
If you get an email that looks like it’s from eBay about a problem with your account, or that requests personal information, look in My Messages. If the same eBay email is not in My Messages, it’s a fake. Please forward it to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@ebay.ie for members in the Republic of Ireland.
