Just tried the Broadband Checker and found a fatal flaw with the results. For me it comes up with Virgin Fibre Broadband as the cheapest average 108mb download £26.66 inc TV. Sounds good you might think. However when we had Virgin cable installed on our street (when they dig up the pavement) they only connected it to houses which gardens back onto the pavement. There are houses on our estate which have shared private driveways about 15+ metres long so they never bothered installing a VM junction box on the pavement because it would mean they would have to dig up an extra 15-25+ of private tarmac driveway. There could have been a solution in that these houses back onto a small park (we call it "The Green" which is grass). However they would still need to dig up about 5m of private tarmac. When the VM agents came round selling broadband I saw them and they only went to houses where the VM junction had been installed in our street. They never even bothered to come to our houses. Its a bit cheeky and galling they didnt even bother to consult us whether we wanted it and what they could do. I think they just didnt bother because it was too much trouble. I was prepared to let them install the cabling I was ready with my answer "Yes, as long as you re-tarmac the whole driveway"

Just to show you what I mean below is the Service Checker for VM and our house is No.14. As you can see no VM services are available for my house or No.12 which is next door.

One other thing the checker does not take into consideration is the exit fee you might have to pay if you are an existing customer with a company and switching before your contract is up.

Yes it does for me also. Therefore how did varkanoid manage to perform a check?
When I did use it, long ago, it was very poor IMO. Many of the short term contract broadband providers were not represented.

The search asks for your current provider but also shows you deals from your current provider which are for new customers only.
Is there a way that these can have the 'Get deal' button disabled (it's great it's there to compare your existing provider vs others) as it's a bit misleading when you click through and read the T's and C's.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Good morning to you all,
Yesterday I received a letter from Onestream advising me as from 1st August my broadband discount will stop due to Covid 19 & my monthly costs will double to £27.99pm, although new customers will only pay £19.99pm & probably be sent a letter in the months to come to increasing their month costs.

my I suggest MSE report or include a filter in the broadband search to advise no mid-term contract hikes by broadband providers or any other services provider of our daily needs.

As A BT fibre customer, with cheap sim only deal I regularly am connected to free BT WIFI on my UK travels.
I cannot find clarification as to whether I switched to another provider that such would occur (to new provider if their hubs allow or what).
So any tool that provides guidance on sim only deals and WIFI UK connectivity on travels would assist.

As far as I am aware only BT provide a large number of free hotspots as in BT routers providing free BT with FON access to logged in users within range.
