Hi Becs, Thought you'd be the best person to ask as you've had experience of sending cakes through post. (Not even tried selling any yet, been trying to get a look I'm happy with!)
Just finished a cake today and have changed things inside and way of making them anyway, when I had finished I decided to weigh it at it was 5 lbs. That's a bag of potatoes!!!! LOL
It just got me thinking, How would I go on if I had to post it? Don't know anything about what couriers charge, or even Royal Mail, since they altered things, so I thought I would ask the expert!
Roughly how much do your cakes weigh? It's hard to know if it's too heavy when theres nothing to compare it to!
When are you having a go at a craft stall again?0 -
Hi all,
Went to a Florist Wholesalers today and got 100 metres roll of white dot cellophane for £11 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also got 20 pull bows for £3.50 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (figured I can use them for xmas & birthday pressies !!)
Will put some piccies on when I get home !!Debt Free Jan 2010!(Be happy) the state of your life is nothing more than the state of your mind! X:j0 -
Hi Guys,
Posting is a nightmare I'm afraid. My 3 tier cakes weigh about 5lbs aswell. When I looked at posting via royalmail it was very expensive. The cheapest option I found was doing it through a courier on ebay. If you have a look on ebay for courier lots advertise for about £7.50, they collect it from you and deliver.
Box's I have ordered through my Mum's shop although she has said I would probably be able to find them cheaper on the internet but I swapped her a nappy cake! The most important thing is that they are double walled otherwise if the box gets wet or hit by anything it will damage easily.
As for filling I'm not sure really, I think the polystyrene worms would be the cheapest but again organised through mum! (handy her owning a stationery business!)
I must confess I don't like posting them because I don't see how they arrive so fret about them until I hear it's arrived ok! I did send one to myself and it was fine but doesn't stop me worrying. I guess I like the fact when i hand the cakes over I know they're exactly as I would want them to be received.

Thanks becs! I feel abit better that your cakes weigh about 5 lb too. It's the toiletries that do it, but theres no option to swap them for something lighter!
I would be like you - a nervous wreck untill I knew they had arrived safely.
I have put a card tube in the middle (with a few things inside) that holds all the tiers together, but it does make it awkward for fitting other things in.0 -
Hi Moonpenny,
I had thought about trying to use a poster tube in the middle of the cake. It would go up through all 3 tiers and I could then put everything inside. It would be easy to do the nappies around the outside of the tube keeping it nice and symetrical. I mainly put clothing in mine but have started to put talc and shampoo in but only the smaller bottles. I haven't tried it yet as keep forgetting to get a tube!
I haven't arranged another crfat fayre yet as going away on holiday in a couple of weeks. There is a big christmas craft fayre for 3 days in november that should attract a few thousand people and it's only 10 mins from home. It's £98 for a 6' x 2' table for the 3 days which is really good so tempted by that one.

I sell a lot through various places that need to be posted. I bought boxes in bulk (50 of them so work out at approx 50p each) box size 12x12x18 and then use air packets. I use parcel2go as the courier (DHL) my 3 tier boxed weighs 2.4kg so not sure how many pounds that is!
Not sure if it will help anyone or not but my cakes always arrive in one piece and touch wood I have never had a bad delivery.Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Becs - The 3 day Craft fair is exciting. Hope you've got the plasters ready for your blistered fingers!
For the tube in the middle, I bought a roll of really thick Lining Paper.(Wallpaper) It a lot cheaper than card and its already curved. The postal tubes are too heavy and expensive. Not too sure about it yet as it's causing a few probs with fitting things in. You have to taper it near the top or you cant get nappies round the top tier. I did it wide enough at bottom to fit a gift in, (about size and shape of medium Q tips and then put small talc on top of that. I did manage to put a Baby Wash in the front (outside of tube) but was fiddly getting nappies to fit round. Double sided tape under bottom item and it doesn't move at all.0 -
Hi Rusty
Wow! yor boxes sound really cheap. All the ones I've looked at are really dear and the wrong size. Do you fit your cakes in sidewards or do you have top openers? I know it's a daft question but I bet it's fiddly from the top and there seemed to be more side opening boxes at the right size than top openers!0 -

Hi Moonpenny they go in sideways, then I pack the air pockets all around them. I also put fragile all over them and on the top in big black letters I put this way up! to be fair though I have used parcel 2 go for many things including pushchairs and never had a problem. I know my pick up driver personally and can tell you what time he would be here etc etc :rotfl:My boxes were only so cheap because I ordered in bulk. Had I of ordered only 1 or 10 then they would have been expensive. but I ordered 50Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Hi Moonpenny,
Mine go in sideways. The one thing I would say is at 50p a box these will only be single skin boxes. That will be fine if they stay dry and don't get hit by anything. I wouldn't risk it coming into the wet part of the year that the box wouldn't get wet. The problem is if it's only single layer it will get sodden very quickly which will then weaken the box. With double skin you have ALOT more protection. I was told a double skin one same size as Rusty's would be appx £3-£3.50 a box.
Thanks for the tips on the tubes.
