  • ive just read this thread, and wow what a great idea! i have never heard of nappy cakes before. my sister in law is due in december and i would really like to try to make one ( nothing professional, it wont be like any of the lovely ones pictured on here) but as it will be near xmas and i have 3 kids of my own, im on a limited budget to make one, so was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of the cheapest nappies, teddies, dummys, blankets? the cheapest rubber bands, cellophene, cake boards, ribbons? is there any companys who maybe send any trial size bottles of baby bath e.t.c for free?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone for the lovely compliments and wishes of luck! I've got the basic cakes assembled now so tomorrow night will be putting the items in and wrapping blankets and muslins around.
One thing I will say is I tried size 3 nappies hoping I wouldn't use as many and I've found it makes very little if any difference so think I'll stick to the size 2's as agree with Shelley they're plainer.
Proofraider I just did 4 cupcakes using plain white socks. There's 3 socks in each cake. I've used the card muffin cases also bought from ebay and they're topped with a red glass button (love the idea of ferrero rocher though!) I've posted some pics below.

Becs, these look great!! I found some cute socks in Top Shop, cupcake design with either pink or yellow background, so am now looking for some matching coloured cases. Current offer on socks there is 3 pairs for £7 and they have some nice designs. I will be checking Primark, Peacocks, Matalan, Ethel Austin - this is getting addictive!

Aww THANKYOU ALL SO MUCH! :j You've all been very kind about my cakes! Yes they were my first attempt but took me AGES to make! Hope I speed up!

Becs I shall get some of those sticky pads you mentioned as I dont want great big holes left either. I was thinking about £35-40 for the cakes so will reduce the price a bit! My husband thought £55...but that was after looking at some of those cakes from online nappy cakes shops- they are soo expensive and only have half the stuff we are all putting in ours! I LOVE your cupcakes they really do look yummy and so adorably cute!

Sethsgran, I got the elephants from ASDA they were £3 or two for £5. I'm going to attempt some 2 tier cakes tonight so will post some pics for your advice soon.

Fishpot, the cheapest place i have found is ASDA and Matalan and Dunelm Mill although not yet been to Primark yet but others have said stuff is very cheap.

Ronnietink, yes its a blanket from Dunelm mill really gorgeous but was more expensive at £3.99 as they had run out of cream £1.99 ones.

I've got the link for my sil website in Jesrey - have a look at her 'baby cakes'. Think they are really lovely and colourful and are very popular!

    Hi Bellag,

I agree think the cakes are comparable with the £55-£60 ones. I think the problem is though unless you're selling through a business looking website people won't pay the same. they perceive them to be homemade (which the professional ones are too) but think that means they should be less money. To be fair if I was using unbranded "ingredients" ie not marked George at asda and nice teddies i would sell them for more but think when people see it is asda items and the like they may feel a bit cheated.

Need to go to Asda and go for a good look :D

One of my work colleagues has asked me to do one for their daughter :D She sais she is willing to pay £30 and as shes a good mate I will only charge costs. So I get to stuff this with lots and lots of goodies!!!

    Hi Bellag,

They certainly do although I bet most people would buy the items themselves if they saw them. I think I would be the same though, if i'd ordered a cake from someone for £55 or £60 and saw it contained items from Asda I think I would be disappointed, I think it draws attention to the fact the costs may not be high, I'm then the sort of person that would tot up the cost whereas it could contain exactly the same stuff but just without the asda tags and I wouldn't even query it! The other thing I think with the £60 ones is that they do look extremely professional and high quality (in the main!) by using nice quality toys like beatrix potter and the like. I'm hoping to get to a trade show for baby stuff to see if I can get any companies through that for good quality toys and maybe even clothing although don't think anything will beat the asda prices on them even wholesale!

    Hello !

First time posting on here (although I read quite a bit !)

I've just had a go at my first 'cake' and here's the finished product .... I thought it would take me ages but with the help of DD it took just over an hour to assemble.

Had to go with the lemon colour theme as we don't know whether babby is going to be a boy or girl ! (My cousin's expecting, not me ! lol)

Thanks to all on here for some fab ideas and inspiration  :T - you're all :A

Edit: Having trouble with pics at the mo.........will get it sorted ! lol
