    Help! Advice needed!

I have been asked by a pensioner relative to make a cake for a friends daughter, but shes only looking to spend approx £10.

What could I put in it?
I will only be charging her cost price

I would be grateful for any help.

My single tier comes in at £8.80 cost. This includes the cello and ribbon.

    Contents :
    17 Nappies
    Blanket
    Teddy

Thanks girls ive tried to do a bit of working out and I get the following

    14 nappies
    rubber duck
    towel & wash mit
    soap
    talc
    shampoo
    vest
    socks
    burpi cloth
Total Cost exc ribbon, cello & profit £9.27

    or

    16 nappies
    teddy
    blanket
    socks
    vest
    bootees
    scratch mits
Total Cost exc ribbon, cello & profit £9.93

So I think if i sell for £11.00 it would just cover cost in total.

now i need to decide which to do, or should i do them both and see which she prefers? I have most stock to hand, and which ever is left over i will add profit margin and try and sell.
  • Hi everyone, havent been on again for ages!!!
I had my lil boy 5 days late mind you on the 18/02/2009 so just over a week old now and he is a quiet one we called him Riley and he weighed 9lbs 12oz not that he looks it.

Oooo for a baby gift someone got us one of them bunches of flowers from babyblooms i have to while they are VERY pretty i really dontt hink they are worth the money as i had looked at them on line before i knew this one was £37 and for that you get included
    1x hat
    4x socks
    2x bodysuits
    1x bib
and included maybe half a dozen flowers

Nicky please don't think I am trying to attack you when I say this but I think you are making a rod for your own back. If you add so much stuff into a smaller cake then people will expect just as much in bigger ones plus more otherwise they won't be willing to buy the bigger ones. I think you ought to keep a smaller tier more simple and with less things in it and make yourself a little money on top. I think you could sell a basic single tier with a nice teddy for around £10-£12.50 and still make a bit of profit on it.

I hope you don't take offense by my post as it isn't meant to be taken that way, I am just trying to help. I have sold hundreds of cakes in the short amount of time that I have been doing them, I have also had trial and error with my cakes where I have ended up not making any profit etc ...

Hi Nicky I do agree with Rusty about the contents. Although we know you wish to make it to the £10 value it could prove to be a problem if the receiver shows it to friends, which she most likely will, and then as word spreads hopefully you will recieve some orders and they would be disappointed to have to pay more OR not receive as much goods.

I would reduce the contents or tell the receiver that you have only made this at a special price as a favour and any more would have to be at a higher cost.

this comes from experience.. hope you don't mind my input ... good luck with it.

Nicky, I have to agree with the above two posts. I would keep it quite simple. The mini one I have made, below, cost just £6. It has ten nappies, 1 bib, 1 winding cloth and Ellie. I am going to put a pair of socks at the front. It could probably do with another few nappies but the winding cloth goes round the 10 perfectly.

Thanks to RustyFlange, chatty123, lrlrip. I understand what your saying and take it onboard as useful, and helpful information. I think what makes it worse is the pensioner is my Aunt my mums twin, and shes seen all the cakes ive made but has no realistic idea on prices of things for babies. She said my cakes where beautiful but she wasnt wanting to spend that amount, mum then said "im sure she can put one together around £10". If I do go ahead and charge £11 - £12, then I will be happy, and im sure if anyone asks she would say I hadnt charged her full amount because shes family, (not that anyone would ask). Although the cakes look gorgeous, I somehow feel kind of cheeky asking prices and there not seemingly to be much in the way of contents, but everyone who has seen my leaflet so far has asked "Am I sure im charging enough", "are you actually making any money out of these".

lrlrip - your cake in post is the £6.00 for all your materials? or just the nappies, ellie, bib, and winding cloth?
Without me sounding cheeky, would you sell this kind of cake for £10.00, I myself would think it would be worth £10.00, but knowing my luck my aunt may offer me £6.00
