I didn't know he wasn't in the position to make that decision. How would I? Dealing with any business involves accepting what any employee is saying as company policy.0

You knew it cost £52.....did you point that out to him? He could not reasonably be expected to be aware that a bottle of vinegar would cost that much. You knew, had you told him I suspect you know that the outcome would have been different. If you had told him then the onus would be on him completely, as it is.........0 -
This is the stuff:
You do get 100ml though, so it's only £520.00 per litre.0 -

Hang on, you get £20 off your first shop so could be only £32
At that price I'd put the bottle on the mantelpiece and look at it. There's no chance that I'd use it on my chips.0 -

Or he could of just walked back to the door from 5 metres away.0 -
Why is everybody still arguing with this person? Waste of time, and it's very easy for them to say they got the refund. Personally, I doubt it.0

It's my understanding that all deliveries and returns are managed by the depot, so he would of had to explain any missing items on his return. Which means he must of known about the cost in the van and been ready to give an explanation, but he didn't both. He allowed me and my carer to think we had a free item that could be used, and didn't care about us being left with as unwanted cost.
It's like putting a bottle of wine back on the shop shelf but a shop assistant sneakily taking the money from your pocket and later posting the wine through your letterbox.0 -

It feels unfair to me to have a refund for £52 for something you have kept and used, in the full knowledge that the driver made the refund comment when he wasn't in possession of all the pertinent facts.
I do not believe the OP was aware that the driver made the refund comment when he wasn't aware of all the pertinent facts. You seem to be trying to make out that the OP is some sort of devious rat which is uncalled for.
No matter what the price of something if you are told be a representative of a company that you can have something for free then the company should honour that promise.
Ocado are not a small company and they are a company that charge a premium for a premium service. In the OP's scenario they have been lacking.0 -
