What does it mean by induction when it says:

Before you get started on your course we ask that you complete a short course induction. From your induction, your tutor can assess the level of support you will need and form an Individual Learning Plan for you.

Probably a literacy and numeracy screening, possibly ask if you need any adaptation under access to assessment.

If you've not got a Level 2 qualification or higher you should be able to walk into any college and get one for free (and the associated work of course.) It's called the "Level 2 Entitlement" and it's a national thing. I suspect Vision 2 Learn is just acting as a "broker".

If you have got got a Level 2 or higher but it's not in the same occupational area (e.g. it's in motor vehicle and you want to do IT), then tell them this. You'll be lower down the priority list, but its worth a go (ISTR it's known as a "thin").

If you're in employment, they'll try an pass you though Train to Gain which is where the employee contribution requirement comes from. Having said that, I believe Train to Gain is currently under-subscribed, so try bartering. AFAIK the recommended contribution by the employer is about a third.

Further Education in particular is a numbers game, real bums on seats stuff. They measure retention (how many stick it out at three census dates) and how many achieve (a recognised qualification).

BTW with Train to Gain there is some small provision for Level 3 you might try for, although the emphasis is extremely heavily on Level 2 (it's to do with various Government papers on competitiveness etc).
  • What's level 2 and level 3?
    Bump due 22nd September
  • What's level 2 and level 3?

Level 2 is supposed to be approx GCSE O-Level, Level 3 at approx A-Level. It's a little more complex than that as you can have things at a specific level that don't provide a full qualification at the level or the same depth of skills, knowledge and understanding. On top of that there's difficulties of comparing different content, vocational area, and non-technical issues such as responsibility, autonomy, problem-solving skills etc

The latest incarnation of this is the QCF. See http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_19674.aspx
It used to be called the NQF - http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_5968.aspx

This ia basically some really simple questions. Someone rings you and just basically asks you the questions you have already filled in on the application form. Eg. That you are able to commit the time to the course, your existing qualifications, why you want to do the course.
Didn't have to do any numeracy or literacy tests.

Also first time you log on have some more questions, like how many hours a week you can commit, little into on yourself and why you want to do course (again :p )

    Hope this helps!
