  • Another brilliant part of this, is if you are signed to the local college you get a registration doccument so this is ionvaluable cos so many shops give student discounts of 10% and 15% (HMV, Virgin, Topshop, Burtons, Bookshops etc). YOU DO NOT have to be in the NUS which is recognised as a trades union and it is illegal to insist on membership of a union to obtain benefits or advantages not available to non members. it is illegal under the Employment consolidations Acts and the TUPE Act.

You can simply show your registration slip and insist on the discount if the shop assistant gets all ars*y about giving it. Or you can join the NUS if you wish.

I did an NVQ with a chairty shop I was volunterring at and I gained around £145 in discounts as I was assigned to Derby college for the NVQ (whih was about 174 miles away and I never had to visit once).
  • after a lot of teething problems with my course (more to do with my employer than the college.....) I am finally away :j and meeting with my tutor on Tuesday :D

I did the Health and Safety Course with vision2learn last year.

I worked at my own speed (which was pretty fast) and completed the whole course within 3 weeks.

Then a few months later i was invited to a presentation in Manchester, so i took along my parents. I was so embarrassed when my name was shouted out and i had to collect my certificate in front of hundreds of people. But it was definately worth it.
  • How do I find out what course are available for my postcode? Have been on the site and can't see anything obvious and would like to see what's available before choosing a course.

    Thanks

These are the courses that the site offers:

    What subjects are available?
They may offer some of the courses in your area, but you wont find out until you apply for a course. It all depends on colleges taking part in the area, funding, etc.

    Hi

I run a voluntary and community sector training project in Medway Towns Kent. We normally offer very cheap courses but also in recent months we secured funding with some partner groups, to offer free training in a variety of work skills related courses (things an employer would like to see on a CVS - first aid at work, health and safety and more job specific courses too like till training. Can't list all the courses as too many to mention). We are halfway through this 1 year project so only a few places still available.
But we are hopeful that we will get more funding after that.

The courses are a mixture of non accredited courses (such as customer services, child protection, dealing with challenging behaviour), accredited courses (such as first aid and food safety - various levels) and full quals being offered by our partners in the project eg NVQ Admin, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS for short!).

There are of course criteria to meet.
    - Applicant must live in Medway (although working/volunteering for a Medway voluntary sector organisation may be eligible)
    - must be unemployed or in a low skilled/low paid job looking to get a beter job.
    - or working in the VC sector and seeking to gain skills that will benefit their organisation and its clients

The money is kinda earmarked for getting people into work or into better jobs but "points" also go to lone parents, older learners, disabled or other diadvantaged groups. We tried to ensure that people who really need the training do manage to get onto the courses (by hook or by crook) there are usually ways to help those who need it.

^ It depends on how fast you work.

I've applied for the iMedia course but in the requirements it says you need a PC that runs Windows and Internet Explorer but I use a Mac. I didn't think this would be a problem but I read on and found out that the course works through an Internet programme of some sort...so I've had to send an e-mail to ask if this would affect me but it's been 6 days and I haven't had a reply yet...Hopefully it won't, this seems like a great course!
