She finishes at 2pm and leaves at 2pm. It's not possible to leave much earlier than you finish (IYSWIM).

No excuses, if the child needs to be collected at 15:15 you do not take a job 100 miles away that will make you late.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

Oh for goodness sake unless the friend works within walking distance then its obvious that there might be the odd occasion when traffic problems will cause her to be late.

tbh you're coming across like someone from the 1950's and that all women should give up their jobs the moment they get married or have children

True, but she hasn't taken a job 100 miles away. It's a 15 minute drive.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

I think she has what she needs so I will bow out now and resist the urge to respond to points about whether she should work 100 miles away (even though she wasn't), or let her child go to birthday parties where male guests are present, or whether she (or I) have sexist issues :).

I think you're entrenching yourself into a ridiculous position. She was 15 mins late. It's not unheard of, and the school has processes for what to do when it happens.

Her journey has a built-in contingency of 1hr 20 mins, which any normal person would think is reasonable.

Would you suggest she sets off 1 1/2hrs early and sits outside the school for 1hr 20 mins every day just in case there's ever an accident again?

BOO. You should be ashamed of yourself. Projecting your own pathetic fears onto your child, who will grow up scared of their own shadow.

If that's not actual emotional abuse, it's pretty close.

Oh i totally agree with you, however...... what you wrote went far far beyond disagreeing and most definitely tipped the balance into trolling.

The consensus on this thread seems to be 'stop making mountains out of molehills'

So, yeah. Loads of 'trolls' on this thread if we use your flawed understanding of the term.

Now now now, dont be slippery :rotfl:
Lets take your very first post to me.
Trolling or disagreeing.....well i dont actually see any part where you have disagreed with me, all i see is a very uninformed personal attack. Had you actually disagreed, and said what with, and had a proper adult dialogue then thats a different matter and i might have conceded. And yes its perfectly fine to disagree, each to their own.
Now trip trap, trip trap, off you pop!

I'm surprised there was nobody in the office to answer the phone. At our school the office staff stay until 4pm and if parents are late (which is occasionally unavoidable) then the child sits in the office until the parent can get there. Circumstances would have to be extreme for social services to get involved.

Personally, I wouldn't be happy about the child being left with a parent, but I wouldn't make a huge fuss about it. You can make it known that you think a more appropriate procedure should have been followed but unless anything like this happened again I wouldn't do anything beyond that.

I work 15 miles from the after-school club that my daughter attends. I allow an hour for the 45 minute journey, and I am unavoidably late maybe twice a year. When this happens I am happy to pay the fine (£10 per 15 minutes) and accept the ticking off that I get. With the best will in the world you can't allow for all possible circumstances.
