Hi,
i just got a letter from M&S credit card re an apple music charge in March 2017, even though i signed up to Apple music in December 2016 & cancelled the credit card in July 2016.
They asked me to send a cheque for £14.99, but i no longer have a cheque book as it was from 1990's and i destroyed it in 2010's.

i received notification from apple music about a failed payment in March and changed my registered card to my amex and ensured no trace of the cancelled M&S card on my apple accounts. I was sure the fee was then charged to my Amex as my apple music continues to work. If i remember correctly the service stopped briefly which is why i changed the payments methods.

I'm so annoyed with M&S for continuing to honour charges to this card. They honoured another payment in September 2016 (house insurance annual renewal) and when i phoned to pay it i asked them to stop all further payments which they said they would do from October 2016.

is there a time limit for how long they can continue to honour payments? I always pay my credit cards when due and will be annoyed if i am i receive bad credit ratings & liable for charges made to cards I have cancelled and have no reason to check for charges on.
I'd rather the retailer let me know so i can amend the payment details when needed.

If you think this was charged to your AMEX card then check your AMEX statements.
Phone apple music and ask them about what is going on.
If you need a new cheque book, order one and next time don't destroy it.
If you don't want M&S to honour payments, then call the companies concerned and change the payment method.
If this has happened with more than one company, then obviously you have not contacted them to change the payment method.

The problem sits somewhere between Apple and you.

M&S have just acted as Apple have told them to.

So cancelling the credit card in July 2016 entitles them to keep accepting charges on it 8 months later?
If they cancel the card I'd expect to not be able to use it. If I cancel it I expect no further charges on it. What if someone gets the cancelled card details and starts buying stuff with it? Am I expected to pay even though I've cancelled it months before? I cancelled the card 5 months before signing up to a new service. I can't be expected to remember all of the thousands of transactions I make on various cards every year. I check my statements, pay my bills and cancel cards I no longer want and take out new ones offering good deals.
How do I ensure no further charges on cancelled cards without trawling through my statements and asking all retailers nicely to remove my details and not charge the card I've cancelled. Theyll rightly assume I'm nuts if I do that, yet that's what your suggesting.

Someone couldn't start buying stuff with it because the card was cancelled.

Your itunes purchases were pre authorised before the card was cancelled.

It's unlikely you have thousands of recurring transactions. I have two.

thats your responsibility to make sure that there are no more, or you will be charged again for something else, and if that involves going through your statements then so be it.

What details did you supply to Apple music for billing? If the account had been cancelled for 5 months before you signed up how did they get the details?
If you mean you signed up in December 2015 what did you think would happen to your contractual payments when you cancelled the card?

You should change your thread title as it's confusing to read there that the cancellation date is in the future.

When you setup a recurring credit card payment then you can't stop it. Only the person requesting the card details can stop it. If they take too much money then you have to contact the people requesting the money for a refund.

You can cancel the card but as the contract you sided with itunes predates the cancellation and it takes priority, so they will just reactivate the card. I don't know if it's been tested in court, I have always assumed it's buried in the small print of the credit card t&c that nobody bothers to read. The alternative would be to find you in breach of contract.

As long as you weren't double billed then I don't see what the problem is. If you were double billed then get them to refund the amex payment.

You can cancel it, either with the card provider or the merchant.

A cancelled card won't get reactivated. It could however get replaced.

You can't cancel a recurring payment with the card provider. They don't reactivate the card as such, I don't think you'll get promotional points etc. They let the payment go through and then chase you for the money.

I know someone who thought it was weird their AA membership kept going even thought they cancelled their credit card, then they moved and everything was going fine until they came to remortgage and they were declined. They checked their credit history and it was shown as being in default. The credit card company had contacted them at their old address and didn't get an answer.
