Also remember they are a business so they aim to give you the top shopper and you kinda end up with some degree of extra discount by also buying the advance packs which are not needed to achieve top shopper.. which kind of could be seen as interest on what you've got stored in advance.. Given the low interest rates.. I know mine is for sure worth more in the longterm stored with them than if same money was in a bank account..

    .....
    3. Or the fact I live in Yorkshire?
Personally I think there is a important link between the discounts and which electric distribution area you are in.
There was a period towards the end of last year when Powershop was very uncompetitive in my area for new customers (North Scotland) and as a existing customer this was reflected in the poor discounts that I received for the special packs etc.
Then the regulator lowered the network distribution charges for this area which enticed in Scottish Power et al with new deals that made Powershop even more uncompetitive.
So Powershop retaliated by introducing a new lower tariff for new customers and lo and behold I start getting much larger percentage discounts for my special packs as a existing customer - checking just now on Which? Switch Energy, Powershop is now the third cheapest option, the cheapest option (Green, Ampere) being only £11 cheaper in theory.
Could be completely wrong in this but thought I would just add it to the discussion.
  • It sounds like it's probably the right answer.
Here's a map showing the UK distribution networks:

Leaving powershop? Or recently left and awaiting final bill?

Well you can still purchase powerpacks but obviously this is only beneficial if the discounts offered are greater than those of your existing unused packs.

    Top O'The Morning Special Pack

New special pack just out, offering in my case a pretty naff 20% discount for the equivalent of 4 days worth of electricity.

25% for me 28.15 worth 37.53. It is welcomed..
  • Me also - 25% and in Yorkshire (Northern Power Distribution Area)!
    £24.68 worth £32.91.
My consumption is 12,000 kWh per annum
  • Before I purchased the Powerpack, I submitted a reading,it's be 4 days since I last entered a reading
The estimated figure from PS was 31353, my actual reading was 31306, my figure being 47 kWh lower.
    The message displayed was
"You have used 714 kWh more than we had estimated, your balance has increased by about 4 days".
    Anyone had a similar experience?

I left Powershop last year because my 2nd year top shopper cost rose by 10% and the discounts on power packs had halved compared to prior year. I moved to Outfox the Market and the transfer was without incident. On my final bill Powershop applied the highest discount packs 1st and then refunded all the unused packs in entirety. I kept my own records of my unused balance and it was correct to within 1p. Credit was refunded to my bank account within 14 days. My account remained open for a few weeks after that but then closed - remember to download all your bills if you decide to leave!
I'm sharing this experience in case there are nerves about the exit process but for me the Powershop experience was all good and I'm just sad that the discounted prices from year 2 were no longer competitive.

Got a really bizarre comment like this just now when submitting a meter reading.
Difference between their estimate and mine was 3kWh (my reading being higher).
The previous meter reading was only two days ago.
In return I am told I have used 306kWh less than they had estimated...  :/
