Having a friend round for lunch is what I call a very civilised idea.
It sounds as though you had a nice time too. Definitely a habit to cultivate (says she, remembering she suggested a coffee with a former colleague and hasn't yet done anything about it).
You seem to be really busy, I hope you get your day off. I imagine being self employed involves constant tension between getting enough work and getting too much, or it comes in surges and that must be a difficult thing to manage.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

So, taxied to the eye exam as am not allowed to drive for 4 hours afterwards. Got drops, pics taken and should hear in 3 weeks. Decided to walk home and was pleasantly surprised at my time. Just about 40 mins. That said, I wouldn’t risk walking these as I could go into full on panic mode fearing I would be late. I’m already agitated enough before any appointment no matter how routine.Did nothing when I got home as eyes were still a bit spacey.A few emails were cleared and I then went to drop off the birthday chocolates that were well received. Also bumped into three other family members while there. Had decided on a chippy tea for me, (dh was batch cooking chicken wings that I cannot abide) so went for a wander round two shops to kill some time. I ended up with two inspired greeting cards and a new throw which I had been keeping an eye out for. Also had some change from £15 which was good. Went home via the chippy and dh benefited from half a portion of onion rings to go with his wings. On Thursday, I got a hotel special offer email to my inbox. It was dbb and so I checked the menus and realised there were actual options for both of us. This is rare as our food tastes differ. It was for just south of Dublin and for sun to thur nights only. As this weekend isn’t a bank holiday there, I had a quick look and managed to get this Sunday night. After deducting meal costs, the room charge works out at roughly £35 for the two and we’ll get a bottle of wine home with us. Today I will clear up work bits and pieces, do some housework and bar the odd email, get clear for sun and Monday. It’s been a fairly intense week or two so happy for the break. On Thursday I also got confirmation of a 25 day piece of work to start mid September with the possibility of more running through to next March. Workload will be heavy but it is what it is. DH finally got his pension forecast from his currently employer with figures for both age 60 retirement and age 67. Both are positive though I am really not in favour of either of us working to that latter point. Some days he visibly flags though wfh means he spends more time at his desk than he would in an office.Right, definitely don’t want anything hanging over us while we’re away so need to get started.

Great bargain hotel getaway! I've noticed that I work longer at my desk if wfh, I am hoping to reduce my hours in 2024 but plan to be doing all 4 days in the office.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

The time away sounds great, I'm never bold enough to book at short notice but it's obviously got possibilities.
Well done on the extra work. Even if it's heavy, at least you've both had time off beforehand and it's nice to know the income is on its way.
We must be at a similar stage approaching retirement (I'm not asking!). My husband and I are both part time now and while it's less cash, it's more than worth it in terms of quality of life.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
