He did say what he intends to do - he's aware it's a problem

Correction, he says it's a problem. Lot's of us don't think that students paying for their own education is any kind of problem.

Further education is expensive, nobody is forced to take part in it, and the direct beneficiaries are the people who do. The very definition of something that shouldn't be funded by the taxpayer.

It's certainly a problem for the people who are burdened with easily £30k of debt, or can't afford to attend uni.

Give each 18 year old a £50k cheque a welcome to adulthood gift.

They can use it as a deposit on a house or to pay for higher education or they can put it into their pension.

At first sight it might seem a ridiculously expensive thing to do as it would cost £40 billion a year.

However there would be tremendous savings from having far fewer people attending university. Many more people going straight into work at 16/18 and paying taxes. Many fewer youngsters on housing benefits. Fewer pensioners ultimately on pension credits (as they either out £50k into a pension at age 18 which returned 5% compounded for 50 years) or they purchased a house early on giving them higher income to save for layer life from a much earlier stage.

Maybe make it a payment at age 22. Those who opt for university get a loan as now but the £50k pays it off at age 22.

In some parts of the country a young couple could combine their 2 x £50k state gifts and buy a modest house outright. With no rent or mortgage to pay for they would have a much easier life. Sale of properties should be restricted for 10 years maybe even 20 years.

Would help the poor. Lower the gap in those who inherit or not. And reduce university higher education to a more sustainable 10% of the population.

I believe this would probably save money. Someone spending £50k on a university education to work at Costa .well give him the £50k and let him buy a house with it or out it into aboension for 50 years. Much better use of capital for him and for society.

So is spending £30,000 on online poker. Doesn't mean the taxpayer should pay for it.

This would be revenue not open to Labour would it? Being as it was deme utterly impossible only a few weeks ago by the Tories I can only assume so.
    Not quite got it still.

Why are Labour seem unable to say simply they would fund it via tax rises?
Of course that may be because they were already planning large tax rises to fund every other manifesto dream; that even they realise that further taxes would be damaging to the UK.

    New Policy?
This is a new direction and I'd assume from your posts, a welcome departure? Or are you simply so blindly in favour of Labour being in power, you would resist anyone else doing anything you'd want Labour to do?

I cannot imagine Corbyn listening to British business saying do not rack up corporation tax as a) it won't raise what he claims and b) it will damage our competitiveness (esp. during Brexit). Oh no, sorry he has already indicated he isn't willing to listen...
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

It could be any number of things. Making the loan 0% for 20 years. Have it written off after 5 years are two possibilities that spring to mind. You seem to know exactly what he meant but I'm afraid that I don't.

And the costs to those "ideas"are what?

And how will they be funded?

This is at least outside the box thinking :-)
What if I am a tad older? Do I lose out on 50k?
What if I blow it and am destitute a year later - what benefits / support can I claim?

How about until you have paid your load off - you paid no tax. That way there is a logic you still pay but also that everyone pays it back. The more they work / earn - the faster.

You don't need to spend £30k on online poker to get a decent job, though.

You certainly don't need to go to University to do that. I didn't & neither did most of the people I know who earn most.
  • It has just been announced that Vince Cable has become the Liberal Democrat leader, being elected unopposed.
Well, who else was there realistically?
