Why do people buy expensive cars?

I don't understand why people buy cars which they know aren't likely to be either the cheapest to run, or safest? What's the point in a car that's so powerful it's dangerous and expensive to fuel and insure, or with rare parts? What don't we all drive corsas and fiestas? People carriers i could understand for large families, or a land rover if you need to pull a heavy trailor on a farm, but not for the school run.
I don't think it impresses anyone, nobody really cares how anyone gets around, and "brand new" just translates to me into willing to pay a premium to drive off the forecourt. Expensive cars are highly vulnerable to vandalism too as well as depreciation

Why do people skydive, swim with sharks, fight with bulls. Because they can, want to and get enjoyment.0

My car costs a lot to tax, insure, and run. Why? Because corsas and fiestas are dull and I want something fun to occupy my driving time.
Why do single people buy houses, when a 1 bedroom flat would suffice?0 -

One person's rubbish is another person's treasure I suppose.0

People own and drive cars for different reasons. Working, commuting, competing, fun, social, hobby etc.
I enjoy working on mines, driving mines etc. It's a Fabia TDi vRS 2006, it has 133k miles now and needs a turbo.
Now i could sell / scrap the car as to a lot of people it's old and has high miles or i could spend approx 1.2k and not only have the turbo replaced which should be good for another 60k or so miles but will also give it a lot more power and torque without affecting other costs too much.
You could argue it's not cost efficient, or it's not money wise and i'd agree but what's the point of saving or having money if you don't spend it on things that you enjoy and make you happy and that's what the 1.2k will do for me.All your base are belong to us.0 -
Try doing a 500 mile round trip in a Corsa. When you've recovered, which may take some time, do it in a luxobarge. Then you will know why people buy big, expensive cars.0

Expensive is all a matter of opinion. To you a £200,000 car is expensive, to someone else it's just a week's work.
And when you're earning large sums, things like fuel, depreciation etc. aren't an issue.
I have a premium car, not because I need it but because I want it and can afford it. I drive a lot and like to be in a car I like to be in. I don't care what others think (although we'll generally go to family events in my wife's Mini so as not to 'rub it in their faces').
The cost of my car is equivalent to around three months' income, which I don't think is excessive. It's equivalent to someone on the average wage spending £7,000 on a car.
And if you apparently don't care how others get around, why worry about it?0 -

I couldn't give a **** what anyone else thinks but I do like cars and I think it's worth spending a bit on a car that I'll get enjoyment from.
Plus I'm in the fortunate position of being able to afford what I want so why should I drive anything less?0
