I once went on a date with a girl who was far more attractive than her profile pictures.

In fact, if her pictures had been accurate I probably wouldn't have contacted her as I didn't think I was in the same 'league'...

...having said that I still tried to get a 2nd date out of her :D

I wouldn't put terms like that on my profile but I think if I turned up to a date and she was totally different to her profile picture I'd just walk out again. If she's willing to lie about that what else would she lie about in the future? Deception is not a good way to start a date.
I met my now husband online and neither of us had photos on there. I remember one guy got really funny with me when I said I wasn't going to put a photo up!
For me I wanted to know about the person without getting caught up in what they looked like. I was looking for a serious relationship and was more concerned about other aspects than looks. I hear that many photos are not a true representation anyway. Someone might look better in real life or look pretty / handsome and be a complete idiot so I don't think a photo is that relevant. If someone picks me for my looks, what's going to happen when I'm old and wrinkly and put on a few pounds? I'd be worried they would be wanting to upgrade me!

I consider looks important. Surely someone who you get on with but have no physical attraction to is just a good friend? It takes that physical attraction to push it into the realms of relationship material IMO. It's also not all about looks, thats what dates are for.

I don't really see the point in trying to deceive as you're going to get found out on first meeting anyway. If I ever manage to finish an internet dating profile, any photo will be like the rest of it, very much "warts and all."

So ... I'm a nerd, I could do with losing a stone (of weight, not a small rock), my house is full of books and I view telephones with antipathy, other than when being used as a portable TCP/IP connection. My idea of a good weekend is a DVD box set marathon of something like Babylon 5 or Buffy.

That should have them running for the hills :rotfl:

What gender are you/do you prefer ... we could be a match made in heaven :D :rotfl:

Seriously, I tend to put up really honest pictures of myself and I've been told on a couple of dates that I've been a "pleasant surprise" in person. Sheesh :rotfl:

Another thing I noticed on mens profiles is they state their height usually from 6ft upwards usually followed by...."apparently this is important".

Is height important? those who don't list height I begin to wonder if they are short.

I am short myself so any man shorter than me would be a put off to be honest but I don't want too tall either. Overall though, personality & attitude would over right (lack of) height.

Not so much internet dating a lady who used to work at our agency used a uk chatline that was free for women. This was quite a while ago like 8 or nine years now. She had split from her husband and was still only 28 going onto 29 then and decided to try it. She got talking to a man who said he lived about 15 miles from her and she swapped phone numbers with him so they could talk off the line. After 2 weeks he asked to meet her. They never swapped pictures beforehand and far from being 32 she said he looked late fifties to early 60s. The silly girl only agreed to let him pick her up in his car instead of meeting him in a mall or somewhere else public. He told her he was looking forward to you know what with her (unsur prising given she was a lovely size 12 with long brunette hair). She told him it wasn't going to happen and he was much older than he let on and he tried to force her to kiss him. He called her a time wasting s*** and she opened the door and got out before he tried to lock it. Yes we all gave her a right big telling off and told her she was very lucky to be sat telling us the tale. She had to report him to the police in the end because he kept on texting and ringing her trying to change her mind and getting angry when she wouldn't. It's just lucky for her he never got to know where she lived.

To some women it is. The "I won't date a man that is shorter than me" (or "shorter than me in heels") type.

I don't even think about it, but I'd be spectacularly not bothered if a woman was taller than me, but at 182cm that's not very many of them.

I'm not short but I wouldn't consider listing my height on a dating profile. I wouldn't hide it but it wouldn't even enter my mind to list it, unless of course it was a field of some sort you could fill in.

Similarly I wouldn't expect a woman to big listing her dress size or similar either. However I would expect a degree of honesty which includes a truthful photo.

I'd estimate a good 25% of female dating profiles state, and I'm paraphrasing, "No shortarses I want us to look good together when I wear my heels".

I've never managed to hook one of these ladies so, alas, can't comment on their real life personality.
  • I'm 5'9" and it goes against me big time on dating sites. A lot of women state a minimum height requirement!

I'd quite like to date someone taller than me. But at 5'4" that's not a big ask. I don't recall ever knocking anyone back because of their height, but then I've not been asked out by anyone shorter than me.

As to the question of whether people look like their pictures, when I was online dating I made sure all mine were recent and that they included a full length shot (clothed I hasten to add!) so it was clear I am not exactly model slender.

I found quite a few guys were careful to post pictures taken from shoulders up that concealed rather large beer guts and I have to admit being disappointed when I met them. Not expecting a washboard stomach (would be cheeky if I did given my figure) but there's a limit to quite how overweight a guy I would date - I am quite active and want someone who enjoys an active lifestyle too. One of the guys who had an especially large gut (I mean the 8 months pregnant sort of look) was complaining about women who posted misleading photos... I did think pot... kettle.... his photos didn't show that belly.
