Keep an eye on the little guy, just in case the lump re appears,
I rehomed a lovely multicolored female hamster who was about a year when i took her on, 6 months later she was running around as normal when i noticed a lump at her sholder blade,
took her to the vet and got anti biotics for the week, it was getting bigger and effecting her balance, took her back and was told just to take her home and keep her comfortable

( I lost Bonesy the male hamster when he was 2 and a half, took him home after anti biotics and a stroke, when i should have asked him to get PTS )

when i asked the vet would it not be better to put her to sleep as the lump was cancerous and she would only get sicker, and i had been down this road before ( fully grown women bawling my eyes out at the vet because Bonesy had another week of suffering )
She had said i must be the one who asks for the animal to get put to sleep, and i would have to sign a consent form, I asked the vet to put the little girl out of her misery and signed the form.

Sorry for such a sad story ,
so glad yours has picked up
Its such a shame that they dont live longer as they are so lovely

I had a male hamster that would continually chew and ping at the bars in the cage, even if he had been in the excercise ball for hours
We bought a ball that you could use in and out the cage ( it came with a stand and a open end part ) for using in the cage,
It didnt calm him totally but it allowed him to use up energy when he was wide awake.

Ok i will look out for one of them. Like you said, i also put my hamster in her ball everynight and i get her out when i am sat on my bed and let her run around on me etc.
Its the upper level on her cage that she is managing to push out and knaw on the edge of it. But im going out to town today and getting her some more chew bars so i will see how it goes from here.

Our hammy gets loads of time in her ball and has a nice wodent wheel in the cage, and chinchilla sand to bathe in, and we let her out loose - most of the time we are home and she is awake she is out of the cage, but she still nibbles her cage.

We have tried chew toys but she shows no interest - I think she just prefers the cage.

We are lucky enough to have her in the living room not the bedroom though!

We have resorted to putting our hamsters cage in the bath tub at night. He really does like to make a lot of noise but not chewing the bars, we are lucky like that that he uses his toys but he likes to climb and his "silent" wheel is going 20 miles and hour. My daughter was having problems with him biting but he has stopped that although he is still quite skittish. She sits in the bath with him when she handles him and over the last few weeks he is so much better at being handled. ;) In fact with being in the bathroom at night he gets more attention from us all. He always comes up to the bars begging for his treats.

Awww, reading al these posts is really making me want to get a hammies again. I haven't had any for about 8 years but I used to have siberian and chinese hamsters (not in the same cage, that would be  - lol)

I had one that was a bit of a biter, I used to put my hand in the cage and let her come over, she would normally maul my finger for a bit and then hop into my hand, it sort of became our routine.

I may have to get a couple of books and see what has changed since I last had one but I think I am getting closer and closer to wanting one, I just need to make sure that I would be able to have decent arrangments for them when I was on holiday.

    I :heartpuls hammies :)

I was in the vets last week waiting for my dog from an op and a girl came in with 6 rats in a cage. I don't really like rats cause of the tails but she took them out for me to hold and I did and they are lovely little creatures and so friendly or at least hers were!! Also held some degu's at pets at home yesterday and they are lovely creatures too.
  • He bites all the time he hasnt bit me for a week and when he did he drew blood, I think its cos I had been cutting garlic and you know you can never get rid of the smell of garlic lol

He hasnt bit me since then (prob cos I havent really held him) but I am kinda scared to pick him up at the min in case he does again, I need to get over it but dont know how

He was dead cute last night he wakes up at about 8pm and I change his food and water as soon as he wakes up (well as soon as I hear him moving around in his cage) and I always give him food with my fingers like I will give him a piece holding it rather than put his bowl straihgt down, and he is so cute when he takes it off me, he was resting one of his paws on one of my fingers while he took the food last night and I was like awwwww lol

I also give him a milk drop every day as well :)

I know he doesnt mean it cos when I walk up to the cage and say his name and make kissing noises at him he comes right up to the glass and stares at me

But I wanted to know if you had any tips on getting them to stop biting? or is it something they just always do?

Can you send it back to wherever you got it from? I believe hamsters are related to rates. Shudders!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
