  • It maybe as simple as the hamster has been enjoying a nice sleep & is still half asleep when it's deciding to attempt to walk around. If the room is cosy, then the hamster maybe a little too warm and is a bit de-hydrated. Try encouraging it to drink water by dribbling drops of water onto the sides of it's mouth; hopefully it will like the drops. Also, male hamsters do tend to live a little bit longer than females.

    Good luck

Life span for a hamster can vary depending on "type" and inbreeding... I had one that lived over 2 years - unfortunately often when you buy them from petshops they don't tell you how old the wee critter is and if it's come from a bad breeder it could be older and more inbred than you realise...
Or it could be poorly... from memory a lot of hamsters can get cancers and not all of them are easy to spot from the outside...
Then again it could be any number of illnesses - which it may or may not recover from...
I seriously hope he perks up though... :(

My hamster has had a few funny doo's since her hibernation experience the other week. Even though we've had the heating on more....vet says she's defo ok. Just prone to deep sleep.

Could it be that he's just very groggy? Have you tried warming him in your hands? Just because you think it's warm doesn't mean he does (thats the prob ours has developed). Hope the little mite is ok.

Just over 1, seems quite young for a hamster to be nearing the end of it's life. Every hamster I've owned has lived over the age of 2, and a friend of mines hammie lived until 4! It was a crabby thing that would bite you, and it's fur all fell out but it managed to live for that long!

Maybe add some extra bedding for it to keep itself warm, as it could be that it's just cold. Hope the little mite is okay!

Yep, a year is not that old for a hammie. I've had several and they've all lived to at least 2.5 years to 3 years old.

    Hope he is ok.

Today when I went in to see my hamster and pick it up, it was really cold and hardly moved, which isn't normal. It's eye were half shut and it seemed like it couldn't hold itself up. I have no idea what's wrong with it, I will take it to vets tomorow but are they open sundays?

How is the little mite today?

I don't know if there's anything we can actually do but the hamster escaped last night and we could hear him at 2am in the wall cavity of the house.
All quiet now but he's probably made a nice cosy nest in the cavity wall insulation.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

You need bucket, bricks and hamster food - leave it in the room where you ast heard the rustlings with the bucket propped against the bricks (or books) at a steep angle. Put a bit of hamster food on each 'step' and at the bottom of the bucket.

If you are lucky the hamster will be able to come out from the wall and find the food - once found he should fall into the bottom of the bucket and have the sides not steep enough to climb out.

It might take a few nights and a bit of luck if he is in the wall cavity.
