National Curriculum – I sometimes reference this site to reassure myself that my daughter is doing ‘at least’ what is expected of her age (it’s normally well beyond!) I really think this is a good reference for those just starting out with HE that worry they aren’t doing enough as you’ll normally discover you’re doing far more! Also by referencing this site you will know what any LA goons expect of your child and how to placate them whilst allowing your child autonomy for the most part http://curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/key-stages-1-and-2/subjects/index.aspx

Online Educational Games
Primary Games covers a wide selection of subjects http://www.primarygames.com/
The Kids Page has a massive amount of games both just for fun and of educational value. The link I provide takes you straight to a memory game but the site is very easy to navigate. Please bear in mind they do have some advertising but normally you can just skip right over this with no problems http://www.thekidzpage.com/freekidsgames/memorygames.htm
Legula from Learn Direct This game is highly educational and draws you in with it’s rich graphics. Some of the puzzles are even a little challenging to an adult, it’s a good one to play with younger children in your lap or for older kids to explore on their own, not to be missed http://game.wheredidtherivergo.co.uk/final/index.html
PBSkids.org has a large range of games suitable for younger children primarily however their Between the Lions games are still a challenge for children up to about 8 years of age http://pbskids.org/
Net Smartz is a great site full of games and videos concerning how to be safe on the internet. I actually enjoy this site myself so I highly recommend it http://www.netsmartzkids.org/games/index.htm?page=webville_roundup/main.htm
One More Level is a site full of educational and just for fun games however my personal favourite is Castle Wars. It’s a ‘card’ game but you can play in 3 modes which makes this more fun than the usual online game. You have the option of playing 1 player against the computer, 2 players against someone in the same room as you or against someone else that is logged into the network. This game is surprisingly addictive however it does a great job of teaching strategy and sportsmanship so I count it as educational vs just for fun http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/castle_wars

Facebook hosts a huge selection of games I personally play Castle Age and occasionally Farm Town (this one is good for kids) but there is a lot to choose from. Please note: some games are adult oriented so supervision is suggested when searching for games http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=games&init=quick
List and review of 20 best free games you can download. Whilst some could have educational value most are just for fun so I’m listing them here. Most of these games are suitable for older kids and adults http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2340697,00.asp0 -

Spell Check simple online spelling ‘test’ http://www.funbrain.com/spell/
Madlibs online! Madlibs help teach your child (or help adults refresh their memories!) about what nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns etc etc are and how they work in sentences. This ‘game’ can be played alone or with a group. The initial page asks for various types of words such as plural noun, verb ending in –ing etc which you type in and then submit. Once submitted these words are placed into a ‘story’ and usually hilarity ensues! The site has a few nice features, one being that if you can’t remember what say and adverb is you can just mouse over it and it will give you an explanation. The other is that it ****’s out cheeky words so if you’re worried about that sort of things your kids will soon stop trying that on and use more appropriate language! http://www.itsamadlibsworld.com/
MakeBeliefsComix helps your kids to create their own comic strips! This is a fun tool to encourage writing in kids of all ranges with plenty of ways to personalise and make things interesting http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Comix/0
