Can anyone tell me if letting the water in a kettle boil and then cool down is definitely de-ironised water/distilled water? I ask as my OH is currently paying £1.32 a litre from ASDA for this water for his CPAP machine and we were told by the nurse that we must use de-ironised water and if we broke the machine by using normal water then we'd be wasting NHS money etc etc etc so i don;t want to use the wrong stuff in the machine (and i can;t get it on prescription - i have asked)
No. This won't work. If anything, it will have the opposite than the desired effect, as boiling off a bit of the water will just further concentrate the impurities in the water. Distilled water is made by boiling it and then collecting the steam, allowing it to condense. I'm not sure what dionized water is.
Oh, I looked it up:

Removing ions purifies it quite a bit, but not as much as distillation would. At any rate, boiling water doesn't achieve either.:beer:0 -
I collect rainwater in a basin then put it into some plastic bottles and keep it for ironing only. No question of hardness in that water. As I live alone I don't have that much ironing to do, and I find that the water I collect is sufficient for my needs.
Rainwater would undoubtedly be purer than hard tap water. But, it isn't as pure as distilled water. Each drop of rain forms around a tiny particle of dust.:beer:0 -
Hi All
I bought 2 lots of ironing water from Sainsbury's for £1.50 and it occured to me I could probably do this much cheaper using something else.
Does anyone put anything in their water to make their ironing smell nicer? any essential oil or something similar that's cheaper than the custom made water? would it be safe to do so?
I did a forum search, but couldn't find if this has been covered, so sorry if I'm repeating.

I live in an area with very hard water and as such lime scale is a real problem.
I currently use the comfort ironing water - What i was wondering is, can i use cheap bottled water from the supermarket and add my own nice smell.
If so what do you reccomend i add to the water to make it smell nice?
Thanks for your helpSealed Pot Challenge #6010 -
you probably can but I am not sure
what they use to add the scent:j:j:j0 -
a few drops of essential oil into a bottle of distilled water would do much the same I would imagine.0

You can buy bottles of deionised/demineralised water and then add a few drops of essential oils if you like scented. Don't use drinking water though the iron will fur up.0

I have a condenser tumble dryer (not very MSE but I would give up my washing machine before the dryer!) and I use the water out of this for my iron.
It stops the iron from furring apparently.0 -
Use Water that you have already boiled out of the kettle.I Believe in saving money!!!:T
