I will take the voddie off your hands are carefully look after it! I use a water filter, one of those Britta ones and just use that water. It has been going for 8 years with no problems. Every now and again spews out some gunk but apart from that all tickety boo! Deionised is recommended.0

With five bodies (6 if you include the dog) in my house, we generate a lot of humidity, so have to use a dehumidifier. This produces more than enough de-ionised water for our steam generator. When we just had the iron, I used this with a drop of fabric softener mixed in and it smelled great. Have not done that with the steam gen as it is under guarantee and don't want to do anything that may invalidate it, but sure that would be the same as with the iron0

Hello there...I'm looking for some old style moneysaving help please!
I live in a hard water area and I've been through 3 irons in 18 months as they get limescaled up by using normal tap water. Using the ironing water you can buy in the supermarkets has helped to solve the problem with my latest iron - but its costing me a fortune!
Is there anything I can use at home instead? I was wondering whether a water filter might do the trick but I'm not sure....and how often do the filters need changing on those? Will it be any cheaper?
Sorry if this may sound really silly to some but I dont know who else to ask!In the words of Bill & Ted, "Be excellent to one another my friends"0 -
Hmmmm I live in an incredibly hard water area too but I have never had this problem - probably because my iron doesn't come out often enough! If you need to use something other than tap water would it be cheaper to use ordinary bottled water (whatever is cheapest/on offer) than special ironing water? otherwise...can you not periodically descale the iron? The descaler I use for my kettle has instructions on it for using it to descale an iron, too.0

can u not boil your water first?!?!
I also just use the water that is in my kettle (that has previously boiled). Or if you have a condensing tumble dryer, the water in that?Ditch 100 in January Challenge 100/100

Hard water is from minerals. You can't boil minerals off in a kettle :P
I would use soda crystals, either a little in the ironing water, or occasionally leave it standing with a thicker solution (and then rinse it out) to prevent the buildup. I'm not sure if slightly too much would affect clothes, so I'd be tempted to do the latter.0 -
Definitely try a filter water jug - it makes a heck of a difference to my kettle (no more cups of tea with scum!!)....my iron doesn't come out often
Could you iron clothes whilst slightly damp so you don't need ironing water?"She who asks is a fool once. She who never asks is a fool forever"
I'm a fool quite often0 -
Try distilled or deionised water [the type you put in car batteries I think]. Sometimes the 99p shop does big bottles.0

Thanks everyone - some interesting ideas here.
Boiling the water makes no difference - in fact my kettles get knackered too....:rotfl:
I could try de-iRonised water (do ya see what I did there?!) and will see if I can get some - otherwise will try my water filter and see if that makes any difference.
Any other suggestions (apart from not ironing!) gratefully received.
