Ironing Water

The reason I buy it, is because the water is so hard where I live it totally ruins the irons. I have been using it for about 5 years now (since I brought my current iron) and my iron is like new. So for me it's not because of the smell - its because it saves me hundreds of ££££'s in new irons !!

I'm with debtfreefuture on that one - I got fed up buying new irons every year. Our water is so hard it's got 'love' and 'hate' tatooed on it's knuckles. Ironing water makes the clothes smell nice (I know, not essential) and since my DS is allergic to fabric softener (yeah, even the so-called hypoallergenic ones) it kind of takes the place that. Asda do some nice ironing water too (but cheaper too)0

I had never heard of lavender ironing water, but it sounds lovely - I don't use fabric softener either. I wonder whether it could be made by steeping lavender flowers in hot water for a while - like making herbal tea? That may be better for the iron than essential oil. Shame it is still a long time before my lavender will flower......."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

I use filtered water but have been looking for orange or lemon to put in it - I just haven't got round to buying any yet!
Might try champys idea - will the leaves do?- they smell when crushed.0 -

We will just have to try it, I guess! Thinking about it, Lemon Verbena might be nice too.... as long as the 'tea' doesn't get so dark it will stain the clothes :-)"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

:rotfl: ROTFLMAO.
I have also heard that de-ionised water can be used in steam irons in hard water areas. De-ionised water is different to distilled water and, as it uses less energy to make, is slightly cheaper. I got some for the car and it was 52p for a litre. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
i believe water that is collected in a condenser tumble drier is distilled.

This is exactly what I use. I store it in an old 6pt milk carton and top it up as and when required. Perhaps you have a friend with a condenser if you don't have one?MFW 2019#24 £9474.89/£11000 MFW 2018#24 £23025.41/£15000

Hi there,
I have some expensive City cotton shirts which the old iron could never get the creases out of. I bought a steam generator this week but I used to like the ironing water with th eold iron. The instructions tell me not to use fridge / distilled / ordinary ironing water with it - Morphy Richards Elite + so anyone know whay I can use with these irons?
Thanks0 -
Even if you can't put your usual stuff in the tank of the steam generator iron, surely there is no reason why you couldn't lightly spritz the shirt with it using a spray bottle, and put plain water in the iron to generate the steam, getting the smell from the ironing water and the effectiveness of the iron from the plain. Imagine this would save money too as you'd use less of the expensive water?0
