He could have lived there in the past but not yet changed it.

I have, but also because my bank account is registered there and I spend a lot of time there. It's easy to be on the electoral roll at my mums address then move my bank account to my dads.

As far as I'm aware, I need both to be the same to be found by the credit agencies right? Also how long does it take for them to get this information?
  • Why are these things so hard lol... I feel sorry for my counterparts at school who have no idea.

Please be careful, jumping straight into credit the moment you can, just because you want the latest gadget, is a sure fire way to fast forward 10 years and you're back on this forum asking how you get yourself out of the tens of thousands of pounds worth of debt you racked up when you were younger.

Yes, your phone may well be "embarrassingly old" But that's not the be all and end all as much as it may feel that way right now. Working hard and saving up to buy things teaches you how to really respect the property you have. A life where everything is accessible immediately doesn't teach these lessons.
  • You need to pick an address to receive post at - this should be the same for everything, bank accounts, phone contracts etc. The reason being, the bank are offering you credit, and if you stop paying they want to be able to find you. Flipping between addresses makes you harder to find, so they just won't give you credit.

£600 on a phone you only expect to keep for 2 years seems like a lot. I have a fairphone, ~£400, designed to be repairable so should last for around 5 years. I have a SIM only contract to go with it, but they're shorter (can be just 30 days) so if my situation changes I can adjust that up or down. Do you really need unlimited calls/texts and 3GB data? You might be better working that out before you commit to paying for it for 2 years...

Whether you spend £400 or £600 on the phone, I think you'd do well to consider it a luxury purchase and save up for it. You can get a much cheaper smartphone in the interim that will do what you need, and let you work out your likely usage requirements :)

It's just to build my credit score, I don't ever plan using a credit card.

Yes, I'm currently working on moving everything to one address, starting with the electoral roll.

I don't expect to keep the phone for two years, but even if I did, I could sell it on for a decent amount anyway.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions ;)

Many of us here can tell you warning stories about the temptations of having a credit card at a very young age and then before you know it you have racked up a ton of debt and it becomes difficult to pay it back, fast forward to either defaulting on your account(s) and having bad credit for the next 6 years, or being stuck in a trap of forever trying to clear your debts and living from payday to payday.

If you are looking for cheap SIM only deals, have a look here:

I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly, and I can move and merge threads there. Any views are mine and not the official line of moneysavingexpert.com
  • If you buy the phone you want then this PAYG sim would be ideal to go in it providing you don't need more than 500 minutes per month...
