We have the medical one he is covered on, it just doesn't cover theft , hubby has that with bank acct.

AA have said all he needs to do is pay the fare difference on the day he rebooks and he will be fine, so that's one good thing.

Does your home insurance cover items outside the house?

Will he need a new ESTA/visa to go with the new passport? [I've not travelled to the USA since the introduction of ESTA so I'm unclear how it works]

His Esta has 90 days so that is okay thankfully, form all filled now he on way back to London, at least he has tried.

I'm grateful it was just a bag snatch and nothing else.

    Thanks

An ESTA is tied to the passport used when it was granted.
Because the passport has been stolen, it will be cancelled and the replacement one will have a new number so the old ESTA will no longer be valid.
As soon as your son has the new passport in his hand, he should go online and apply for a new ESTA immediately.

This is why I asked the question, because although I didn't know I suspected that there would be a link between passport number and ESTA, and Shaun has confirmed that is the case.

He might like to re-think his views on insurance. Although since he has medical coverage (vital for anyone going to the USA) it is a personal choice whether to get other insurance.

I hope he has explained the situation to his boss. Perhaps someone else will feel like swapping shifts with him over the next few days? Otherwise this would be a good time to plan a holiday in the UK.
